Major Donor Threatened to Withhold $3 Million from GOP

Republican candidates and officeholders should brace for a rougher battle in the General Election, because the California Republican Party is probably not going to be around to provide any kind of support fire power you desperately need against the Democrats in November.
Aside from losing nearly 170,000 registered Republicans from the state's voters roll last year, the CRP just cannot seem to get itself out of the financial mess that is hurting the party's operation. The state party has about $3.2 million cash-on-hand, but that number is also saddled by $3.4 million of unpaid bills. Furthermore, in its federal account, the CRP listed a $34,000 balance with nearly $460,000 in debts.
Recently, Larry Dodge, CEO of American Sterling Co., sent a 4-page complaint letter to Chairman Ron Nehring outlining his criticism of the state party. What is so significant about Dodge is not that he is just a mere activist, but a major donor who pledged $3 million of his own money to wipe out the CRP's debt. And he's hinting of withholding it! Here are some of Mr. Dodge's complaints:
I also learned that the LA Republican Party just let go of their Executive Director because of budget cuts from the state party. Hopefully in Orange County, we can still keep our ED. Please visit OCGOP to buy a table at the upcoming Flag Day Dinner to support our local party. If George Andrews doesn't sell enough tables, he might lose his job.

UPDATE 6:31 PM: According to the Secretary of State's website, the Republican Party of Orange County has about $111,644 in the bank as of the latest financial report. The OCGOP has the most cash-on-hand for any county committee in California. Surely this amount will only increase after the Flag Day Dinner.

An ineffective Finance Chairman who is more focus on running for Mayor of San Diego than raising money for the party.Mr. Dodge does have a valid concern. I know that many of my fellow conservative friends are hellbent on Republican purification, but at what cost? The Alabama Republican Party may be able to do that in the Deep South, but can we do it in California where the Democrats outnumbered Republicans by more than a million voters?
Party officers are squandering money without any accountability.
Committed a strategic blunder by prohibiting Declined-to-State and Independents from participating in the February 5 Presidential Primary, while the Democrats welcomed them to bolster their number.
Alarmed by the possibility that the CRP is considering a bylaws amendment to exclude all non-Republicans from participating in other GOP primaries as well.

The Orange County Republican Party will continue to lose influence and economic strength unless a more moderate approach is adopted. The Country and much of the County is changing failure to adapt will negatively impact the party in a significant way. The old hard core christian right had its day and a successful one at that. But "the times, they are a changin".
Anon.10:58, blame on lazy republicans like us for the down fall of republican registration in California.
Tell CRP chairman to send bilingual registration workers to the new citizen swearing -in ceremonies across the state with "party comparison charts".
Many Catholics and latinos will vote for their family and moral values..... believe it or not!
Dems post spanish speaking, paid workers to register newly sworn - in citizens at each ceremony locations with great success.
Comparison chart is the key to attract latino citizens because many of them are not informed of Dem's "against family value" platfom.
12:45,
The social issues are not sufficient motivation, not when every single GOP prez candidate rips Latinos immigrants. The contrast offered by the Dem candidates is stunning. Obama and Clinton both are talking about solutions, while the Reeps keep blathering about building walls.
Ask the Chinese how the Great Wall worked out? It didn't. The Mongols bribed their way in and swept China. Ask the Romans how their walls kept the Goths out. They didn't! History is replete with stories of walls that, like those surrounding Jericho, eventually came crashing down.
Or maybe the problem is as Ron Paul has been saying throughout this campaign, "the party has lost its way."
Arturo de Piedra aka Obama voter, are you scared that we might convert naive dems to republicans?
We don't worry about the traitor's vote, like yours.
Go home and keep singing for Obama in spanish but remember, we republicans will prevail at the end.
"Please visit OCGOP to buy a table at the upcoming Flag Day Dinner to support our local party."
Or you can buy a table at the Orange County Democratic Party's Flag Day celebration from which all of our proceeds will be donated to wounded vetrans from iraq and Afghanistan.
The OC Democratic Party Flag Day will be held at the Garden Grove Elks Lodge in Garden Grove at the corner of Trask and Newhope on June 14th, 2008, 11AM to 3pm.
You may call Paul Lucas to arrange to buy tables or individual tickets at the contact information below. Again all our proceeds go to help wounded veterans of the Iraqui War. Not to the Party.
The American Red Cross will also be joining us as it is national Blood Drive Day. All blood donors will recieve a Free Tshirt to commemorate the event. All Blood donations will go to support local needs as well as those in Iraq for our front line soldiers.
The GOP sure talks a good game but the Democrats are actually putting their money where their mouth is. I challenge the Republican Party to match our donation to wounded Veterans of that totally uneccessary war in Iraq.
For tickets contact Paul Lucas of the Flag Day Committee at the following.

Great and worthy challenge. I think you should send a letter to Scott Baugh and see if he accepts the challenge for their Flag Day event. I bet he won't even respond and you can bet they won't be donating their proceeds to the vets.
Ahh Paul...do you suppose that had we not ever gone to Iraq and Afghanistan that the terrorists would have thought we were pretty nice and then decided that they should just back off and let us have our freedom. Or do you suppose they would have thought we were a bunch of sissies and infidels that needed to be taught that Allah would bring wrath upon America even more if we did not convert to their extremist views? Do you suppose we would have been the further recipients of more bombings on American soil, perhaps the Statue of Liberty would have been next. Perhaps the Capital, perhaps the White House. That would have really showed us. It would be really nice if the Terrorists had a published address at which we could reach them to negotiate and try to bring reconciliation between Allah and the God of America. But, Alas dear fellow, the cowards hide among rocks and air tapes of throat-cuttings so I just wonder, what would have happened if we had not gone to their ground to do something? Something, even if it was not perfect, has kept them from our shores for now. Let's hope that continues after the November Election.
Do you suppose the Republican Party needs to donate their proceeds to the Vets? It's a nice gesture, however a weak one when the Dem's don't support the bills meant to better arm and pay our deserving Vets, but the Republicans do overwhelmingly. I think we (the Republicans) win this hands down on "who" supports the Troops. Get a grip.
One day I came home and said to Nancy, “You know, something just dawned on me: All these things I’ve been saying about government in my speeches, all these things I’ve been criticizing about government getting too big, well, it just dawned on me that every four years when an election comes along, I go out and support the people who are responsible for the things I’m criticizing.
Maybe I will keep my money this year and skip the Flag Day Dinner.
Go Ron Paul Go. You are our only hope!
Ronald Reagan
Anon 4:27 As a vet there is no question that the support given by Congress is greatly appreciated and necessary. But raising money for Vets and their families is not a hallow gesture. It is a flag day event and why not show some bi-partianship and both parties use the money for Vets' families.
It is a great day to put aside differences and raise money for the widows and their children. The question is will the Republicans accept the challenge?
Paul,
Nice gesture and a very worthy endeavor, but you have to admit coming from the Dems seems a little hypocritical don't you think?
How many tables is Code Pink buying?
How many tables is the City Council from Berkeley buying?
And how about John Kerry? How many tables is he buying? Oh, I forgot, he is the Dem that said all of our military are terrorists.
You guys can not be serious? Anyway, the challenge is out there. I here by reiterate my challenge to Scott Baugh and the OC GOP to match our donations to wounded warriors from Afghanistan and Iraq.
Ask the Chinese how the Great Wall worked out? It didn't. The Mongols bribed their way in and swept China.
Art, that was the Manchus, not the Mongols. The Wall actually worked pretty well. The fact that the Manchus needed a disaffected Ming general to let them through is testament that the fortification was effective.
Ask the Romans how their walls kept the Goths out.
If you're talking about the walls around the city of Rome in 410 (when Aleric sacked Rome)...comparing a 5th century siege to a border fence is apples and oranges.
If you're talking about Hadrian's Wall across northern Britain...historians believe that was as much, if not more, about regulating the flow of goods and people between Roman Britain and ancient Scotland -- than it was a defense against the Picts. The Romans relied more on the mobility of their legions than on walls for frontier defense.
I agree whole heartedly with all of the issues that Mr. Dodge has illustrated.
We all know (or definetly should figure out soon) that we the people are the ones to dictate change throughout this country, not government. In order for the U.S. to prosper once again (which it definetly will) it all starts with the commoners making rational, positive, fundamental decisions, which have long lasting, profound effects on the future.
Unifying the republican party is crucial for the further development of our way of life, hopefully we find this out before it is too late.
I wondr if anyone from the GOP will accept my challenge?
Paul Lucas, are you drunk ?.. I understand you want to recall our troops right now and give our enemy a thumbs up!.
We need President Reagan today.... for his wisdom and guidance to solve our military problems in Iraq.
CRA Republican....Are you on drugs sir? I never said anything in any of my posts about recalling all our troops now. That would be disastrous for both Iraq and the US.
What I merely wanted everyone to see in my very first post is that the DPOC has been holding flag day celebrations for years led by our flag day Chair Colonel George Geocopy, A Vietnam war Combat Veteran. All of our proceeds after costs have gone to wounded veterans. I simply challenged the OC GOP to MATCH our donations to these worthy efforts.
Our tickets are merely 35 dollars each. I believe the OC GOP Flag day won’t even let a Reporter from the OC Register in to cover the event for less than 100 dollars. Additionally, not one red cent from the GOP Flag day event goes to support a single combat wounded veteran. Every red cent from the OC GOP Flag day event, to which I understand reaches into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, goes to the OC Republican Party. Not a single penny goes to help one of our troops with life long wounds both physical and psychological.
I simply invite those who would like to see their money go to the heart of the days focus by buying tickets to the DPOC event and help veterans of combat service to our nation instead of helping disingenuous candidates send out glossy mailers on how they are going to fight illegal immigration as the next member of the Water Board, School Board, city Council, State Assembly / Senate, Board of Equalization etc etc.
You can dodge the challenge, change the subject, and throw as many Red Herrings as you want. But will not change the fact that no one from the OC GOP has even considered my challenge. Thus illustrating the depth of the GOP's empty rhetoric when it comes to Supporting Our Troops.
The Republican Party has lost its way. Somewhere it simply gave up being the party of Ronald Reagan and has apparently merged with the Democratic Party. It has a tax & spend war monger for a president and a bond and spend governor in Sacramento. There's no longer any difference between the D's and R's and so, no wonder fundraising for the R's is waaaaay down!
Mr. Lucas,
You can run fund raisers for the wounded vets anytime you want without attaching a partisan political party tag to it, and I, along with all sorts of people with odd political persuasions will participate. That you would try to make it a partisan contest says much about you.
I give blood to the Red Cross every 90 days, and as a retired veteran of 30 years in the USN, no one is going to question my commitment to the welfare of our troops. I suggest if you really care about them hold a fund raiser for MAF (Move America Forward) or the Military relief societies.
The Republicans have let the ultra conservatives take over the party ideology. America votes for moderates -- that is MCCain and that is what Obama and Clinton are pretending to be. Those who continue to lay burnt offerings on the altar of Ronald Reagan may feel like they have gone to battle for conservative values, but they'll lose the war. Government should be about building bridges and consensus where everyone gives a little. The republican "my way or the highway" attitude will guarantee the Democrats take over Washington. I hope the party listens to Larry Dodge and gets its act together.
If I had $3 mil. to donate to the party, I'd probably want to dictate how the party should operate. Hopefully, the appointed members of the California Republican Party will choose the party platform and also who votes in our primary elections. Do you think General Motors' stockholders are allowed to vote at the Ford Motor Company stockholders' meetings? We had a blanket primary several years ago. Democrats in Orange County, California, elected two moderate Republicans in districts that were solidly Republican. The candidates with the most Republican votes lost the election. Both the Democrats and the Republicans went to court to change the process so that only their own party members could elect their candidates. People who won't state a party affiliation disenfranchise themselves.
