OC/DC: McCain's Elephant in the Room?

Prominent conservative talker and former Reagan Administration official Bill Bennett and his colleague Seth Leibsohn, also a fellow at the Claremont Institute, outline the conservative case for McCain here in today's National Review online. (The link is to the "print" version to make searching easier...read on.)
The piece is convincing.
There's a silent elephant in the room, however.

There is a healthy and reasonable debate to be held over why conservatives have concerns about Senator McCain. But don't take my word for it. Look no further than the words missing from one of the most reasonable and thoughtful recommendations of the Senator.

The only remotely convincing argument for McCain is that he will focus on Iraq and the war on terror.
I ask: what is the point if he drives all of the terrorists out of Afghanistan and into the United States through our unsecured borders.
I like and respect Ron Paul even though I disagree with him on Iraq. But, Ron Paul was at least on to a part of something because ultimately, the war on terror is meaningless if we can't keep our own border secure.
The priorities in the war on terror should be:
1) Secure the border
2) Defeat global terrorists
Both are worthwhile endeavors but we can't put the cart before the horse.

What?
Odd. Solsby's then-boss voted for McCain-Feingold.
Mr / Ms Incredible -
Even odder:
The House approved Shays-Meehan (Mc-F companion bill) in Feb 2002 -- several months after I left Capitol Hill.
