This came over the transom from the Jeff Miller for Assembly:
Neil Blais Uses Enron Style Accounting Practices to Inflate Campaign Reports
Assembly candidate Neil Blais has managed to inflate his available cash to conduct a primary campaign in the 71st Assembly district by over $100,000, using highly questionable practices that would make Enron accountants blush.
"If Neil Blais were running a corporation instead of a campaign committee, he could probably be prosecuted for cooking the books and deceiving investors," said GOP consultant Dave Gilliard, who works for Republican Jeff Miller. "Blais will fit right in at the Capitol in Sacramento during budget time."
Blais' campaign report, filed late yesterday, shows the following:
- A $64,597.02 loan Blais made to his own campaign on June 28, 2007, was paid back to Blais after the reporting deadline. This loan was obviously made to inflate his cash-on-hand figure and deceive voters and donors.
- On December 30, 2007, one day before the reporting deadline, Blais turned around and "re-loaned" his campaign the exact same amount - $64,597.02. Again, it is obvious this loan was made for the purpose of artificially inflating his campaign report.
All told, the questionable loans and unspendable General Election money accounts for 43% of Blais' cash-on-hand.
- A total of $43,541 of the donations received by Blais are for the General Election and cannot legally be spent during the primary. This is another tactic Blais is using to artificially inflate his report. While it is somewhat common to have a few thousand dollars in General Election funds appear on a Primary Election report, $43,541 is an extraordinary number.

Gee Mr. Gilliard, getting a little desparate are we? I guess this is all you can do when you now obviously are in a major tailspin that is out of control. But we all know that this is your style of campaigning. Is your boy Miller of the same mold?
I didn't expect them to get nasty until after the presidential primary. Let's get ready to rumble!!!!!!
This is a really sad attempt to attack someone and make them look bad. In reality Blais did nothing illegal and it appears the other side is grasping at straws. How much have the other candidates collected in frontloaded money? Enron style - this press release is a bunch of hooey and BS
Let us not be so melodramatic people. This is just politics.
"Rubbin' in racin'..."
Criticizing personal loans and general election funds on hand is part and parcel with running a campaign and anyone jumping on the Miller camp is being a drama queen.
