1st Supe Watch: Janet Nguyen and Hoa Van Tran Turn In Sigs

Posted by: Jubal | 02/25/2008 5:33 PM

janetnguyen1.jpgLast Thursday was the deadline for candidates to turn in signatures in lieu of filing fee. As the term implies, it's a means for candidates who can't afford the filing fee to get on the ballot by gathering a certain number of signatures. Every valid signature reduces the filing fee by 40 cents.

Turning in that large numbers has the benefit of creating at least the appearance of grass roots support - plus, it gives the candidate the beginnings of a mailing universe of supporters.

In the 1st Supervisor District, only Supervisor Janet Nguyen and Democrat Hoa Van Tran turned in sigs in lieu.

Janet turned in 48 signatures, of which 40 were valid.

"Why even bother?" a reader might ask. After all, she'll still have to pay the $1,430.42 filing fee (minus the $10 those 40 valid sigs save her campaign).

Well, Janet has to turn in 40 valid signatures for her nomination papers, and since the 40 sigs in lieu also count toward that, it makes sense to turn 'em in early and save the $10. Plus, you find out ahead of time if you have enough valid signatures -- which saves you from being one of those saps who turns in nomination signatures at the deadline only to discover you're short one valid signatures.

For his part, Hoa Van Tran turned in 116 (the ROV hasn't finished verifying them). Not that it matters. Hoa's candidacy was part of parcel of a Joe Dunn run against Janet: Hoa's role was to be a Vietnamese Democrat stalking horse who bled Viet votes from Janet. Ever since Dunn left OC Demos hanging with his candidatus interruptus routine, the rationale for Hoa's campaign has evaporated. I'll be surprised if there's a dime spent on his candidacy -- either by his campaign in the form of independent expenditures.

I wouldn't count Hoa Tran as a non-serious candidate. He's the only Dem in the race as things are for now.

Hoa Tran already spent tons of soft money, or soft money being spent on his behalf. He's been on Viet-language radio and TV getting voice and face time for the past couple months.

re anon Mr. Soft Money said:

Soft Money is illegal. Let's see if this shows up Hoa's reports. Actually he has only been on Do Phu's SBTN tv show. (Saigon Broadcasting Television Network) only the folks out of Oc watch this.

Anonymous said:

Hello!? Hoa Van Tran's been on Little Saigon Radio every week.

Also, SBTN has over 60,000 subscribers in Southern CA, lots of them in the OC.

re anon said:

again lets see what his reports show

Yes, remember Tri Ta? Known only to the Vietnamese community and he cleared a path to being on the Westminster City council with that vote behind him. Fear not, the path is clear for a complete takeover.

H. Van Tran is for real. He's working hard to firm up support and is reaching out to v-community media outlets to get his message out. There are a number of issues in the community that don't reach the MSM but garner a lot of coverage locally. Tran, an attorney is taking this race seriously, I would think unless a bigger name dem enters the race. If not, it looks like he's content to take it to the streets of little saigon and surrounding cities.

It's good to have an alternative female candidate, Dina Nguyen, in addition to Janet, who is disliked by many in the area.

student said:

I am also supporting for popular, conservative republican Garden Grove Councilwoman Dina Nguyen.

Anonymous said:

The fact that Dina or Trung did not turn in signatures is an interesting development? Does anybody have an opinion why they did not turn in sigs?

Anonymous said:

That Trung didn't win last time. Is this any issue to you people or is this a popularity contest?

Anonymous said:

It's still 13 days out before the deadline for the sigs. What's the hurry?

Janet shouldn't hold her breath of hoping not to draw multiple opponents.

Anonymous said:

Can anyone please tell me just what part of Dina Nguyen's life has been conservative?

Anonymous said:

For starters, she hasn't raised any taxes or fees on the CC. She's pro-life. Can you say the same for Janet?

student said:

We will be happy to have Dina as our next supervisor. All of our conservative republican friends are supporting her.

Anonymous said:

Supervisor Janet Nguyen is a Pro-Life conservative Republican. Sorry, but the sour grapes are getting old (any progress with your lawsuit?).

At this point, there is no Republican opponent to Supervisor Janet Nguyen. Care to step up to the plate and actually file your candidacy?

Wantta bet? said:

Anon,

What sour grapes? It's in your head. Is it not legit to ask you, Janet Nguyen, these questions and expect straight answers.

"At this point..." is right. But this point is a far cry from the filing closing date. Janet will have plenty of challengers because she is hated by many.

Want to put down a bet that Janet won't/will have challengers? If she does have challengers after 3/7, why don't you come on the blog and apoligize to everyone for being arrogant and stupid, for starters.

Anon at 10:17 a.m. You're off to the Village of the Banned, too.

Same for Anons 10:20 a.m. and 10:33 a.m.

If you can't discuss the issue without getting in to personal attacks and gossip, that's what happens.

Jubal, this entire string of posts is getting old and way out of control. Thanks for bringing a halt to the madness.

student said:

Anon,8:32, I can bet you that there are at least handful of candidates seeking to replace unpopular, feeble Janet.

Anonymous said:

What happens in the village of the damned?

Anonymous said:

Ah Jubal, there's another post for the village.."feeble Janet" does that violate policy, a personal attack?

student said:

Anon. aka Art.P, you are the one who instigates all these personal attacks.
"feeble" means....... "weak" (candidate)!

No More Rants said:

Art,

Everybody is tired of your useless rantings that add nothing to the blog.

Anonymous said:

Anon 2:50PM

Ditto to Student, feeble means weak.

According to Wikipedia, feeble-mind was a term used from the late 19th century through the early 20th century to loosely describe a variety of mental deficiencies, including what would now be considered mental retardation in its various types and grades, and learning disabilities such as dyslexia.

I don't think Student referred these terms to Janet. Or he/she did?

student said:

Art P., aka Independent Party member, Supporter of Obama..... many times posing as Anon....

As a Independent Party member....Art Piedroza, I wonder why you are in our republican blog talking about our internal republican business .......ie. cra membership issues, supporting a particular republican candidates???

Art, according to Webster's Standard Dictionary:

feeble -> adj. weak, infirm.

Art, when did I said "feeble MIND" ?

Anyway, you should keep your postings in the Independent or the Liberal blogs because you cause sometimes unnecessary confusions and instigate personal attacks among our bloggers....... only to benefit Dems/liberals....

DIEPTHROAT said:

I would definitely like to see Dina wipe the floor with Janet...as for Hoa, I'm curious to see how well organized the Democrats in the community are...

Jubal, your commentary is great...keep up the good work...didactic, insighful and yet entertaining...
