Whoever the Board appoints will serve the remainder of Mike Carona's term. Unlike what was previously believed, the Board doesn't have the option of calling a replacement election.
That effectively rules out the option of appointing a caretaker. Whoever is appointed will have the job for three years and will no doubt want to run for election in his or her own right in 2010.
I spoke this morning with Matt Petteruto, chief of staff to Supervisor Bill Campbell. Matt said Sup. Campbell would like the Board to take it's time and conduct a nation-wide candidate search to ensure whoever is appointed is picked from the "best of the best."
Now, it's the scramble to try and make it to the Sheriff's presser.

Go Ralph Martin go!
One of "the best" is 500 feet away at SAPD. Chief Paul Walters would be a fine fit. He is a respected leader in Orange County public safety who would be a credible and calming force following Mike's retirement from public service.
