DUVALL APPLAUDS GOVERNOR SCHWARZENEGGER FOR LOOKING PAST THE DOLLAR SIGNS TO REAL EDUCATION REFORM IN STATE OF THE STATE
Orange County Assemblyman Praises Governor For Proposed Spending Cuts
SACRAMENTO -Assemblyman Michael D. Duvall (R-Yorba Linda), a member of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee for Education Finance, released the following statement in response to Governor Schwarzenegger's State of State Address:
"For far too long the mantra in education policy has been 'If only we had more money...' The problem with that line of thought is that more and more money has been allocated every year toward education at the state and federal level and there hasn't been a proportional increase in student performance.
"I'm glad Governor Schwarzenegger sees the need to punch our way out of this money-centric paper bag. We need to look toward alternative reforms like increasing transparency, improving standards, increasing local and parental control, and funding fairness. As a member of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee for Education Finance, I am eager to continue work toward these crucial objectives.
"Last year I voted against the State Budget, because I didn't see the fiscal restraint I thought would land us in hot water if state revenues were hit. State revenues were hit. We are in hot water, a massive $14 billion deficit. Now it's not just fiscal restraint but serious and prudent cuts that need enactment in order to put us in good shape. I'm very encouraged to hear the Governor speak of a balanced budget amendment and take to heart the concerns of legislative Republicans."
