Janet Nguyen Seeking OC GOP Early Endorsement
Posted by: Jubal | 01/03/2008 2:05 PM
It's not just a new year, but a new election year...although for the last few years in Orange County, it seems like it is always election year.
Among other things, incumbents are gearing up their re-election efforts, and few OC incumbents are doing more gearing up than 1st District Supervisor Janet Nguyen.
As readers may or may not know, GOP local electeds who belong to the OC GOP's Local Elected Officials Association may apply for an early endorsement. Five have made such a request:
This late December e-mail from Endorsements Committee Chairman Kermit Marsh to OC GOP Central Committee members outlines how the early endorsement process works:
The deadline for submitting a withdrawal request to Endorsements Committee Chairman Kermit Marsh is January 12. After that date, a Central Committee member can still make a withdrawal request, but such a request would require an affirmative two-thirds vote of the Central Committee.

This would normally be a no-fuss process for the above electeds, but for Janet Nguyen nothing is no-fuss.
- OC Supervisor Janet Nguyen
- OC Supervisor Bill Campbell
- OC Board of Education Trustee Ken Williams
- OC Board of Education Trustee Felix Rocha
- OC Board of Education Trustee John Bedell
This late December e-mail from Endorsements Committee Chairman Kermit Marsh to OC GOP Central Committee members outlines how the early endorsement process works:
Any such requests for endorsement received more than 105 days before the opening of the filing period will be put on an early endorsement list and sent to all members of the Endorsements Committee and the Central Committee. Any Endorsements Committee member or Central Committee member may request within 20 days that a name be removed from the list. All names not removed from the list during this 20 day period shall be deemed endorsed. [emphasis mine - MC]What happens to an early endorsement seeker whose name gets the hook from a Central Committee member? Per Marsh's e-mail:
At the Central Committee's next meeting, the Central Committee may also consider any name removed from the list, and may consider withdrawing its endorsement of any incumbent on the list. Endorsements of Republican incumbents removed from the list are granted upon a two-thirds affirmative vote of the Central Committee members voting.I don't think I'm going out on a limb by guessing that if any early endorsement seeker's name is hit with a withdrawal request, it will be Sup. Nguyen's -- thus setting up a Central Committee showdown between Team Janet and Team Trung. I don't know the two factions relative strength among Central Committee members, but if Team Trung were able to deny her the OC GOP endorsement, it would be a significant blow to Sup. Nguyen's campaign.

"For Janet Nguyen nothing is no-fuss."
Are you kidding? What about Bill Campbell?
Campbell endorsed disgraced O.C. Sheriff Mike Carona. He also supported our disastrous O.C. Treasurer, Chriss Street. And he caught flak for supporting John Urell too.
Moreover, there homes in Campbell's district were burned down because he opposed Measure D - which meant that the O.C. Fire Authority did not have the equipment it needed to fight the recent fire in the Santiago Canyon.
Supervisor Janet Nguyen has been an exemplary public official. She has served her constituents very well. She absolutely deserves the early endorsement of her party.
Trung Nguyen is finished. His adviser, Mike Schroeder, has his hands full trying to keep Carona out of jail. And the Vietnamese voters in the First District will NOT vote for Trung. They don't want to lose the seat to Joe Dunn or Claudia Alvarez. They know better!
Team Tran needs to back off of Supervisor Nguyen. How would it serve the OC GOP to have a Democrat take the First District?
"Team Trung" doesn't exist anymore. He is only running for the sole purpose of paying back some of his massive personal debt from his last losing campaign.
Trung's biggest benefactors, supporters and staff that supported him last time around are preoccupied or otherwise absent. Assemblyman Van Tran does not seem to be overtly supportive of Trung and Saulo Londono his former campaign manager is now working for Curt Hagman in his race for AD 60 against Larry Dick. Just about the only person in any way publicly helping Trung is Mike Schroeder. As far as I can tell, Schroeder's support is based on his interest in winning the legal battle he started. I don't remember ever hearing Schroeder sing the praises of Trung or articulate how he would make a great supervisor.
So might someone, a member of the Central Committee ask to pull Janet's name from the list? Sure. But they would be hard-pressed to make any case for why she doesn't deserve to be re-elected, to receive the County Party endorsement.
Janet's voting record is solid AND she is the number one target of the public employee unions. The party ought to put all our support behind Janet-to make sure she gets re-elected and to keep the seat in GOP hands.
I am endorsing Trung for the supervisor's seat.
Art, I think Janet is the one who is finished! She has been nothing but a embarrassment for our republican party.
People around the state still talks about how Janet has stolen the supervisor seat by initiating a fraudulant legal tactics against Trung.
Janet has created a severe division among republicans with her immaturity as a supervisor want a be and she needs to be removed, no later than in this 08 election.
Adam D Probolsky, You are not Probably but absolutely wrong.
Janet's biggest opponents are none other than core republicans whom have been underserved by under achieving Janet.
All former friends of Trung are more than happy to take the seat back to it's rightful owner in 08.
Get real! The same central committee that couldn't even censure the Sheriff is now going to take a stand in a primary against a sitting Republican? If that is the strategy of Trung and his advisor Schroeder, the OC GOP will be an even bigger embarrasment than it is now.
Lookee, lookee. Baghdad Art vomiting out another mindless defense of his pet supervisor.
Maybe Art can accuse Bill Campbell of being a drunk whose on the verge of divorce and living in his office. Oh wait, Art already dumped that bucket of mud of Chris Norby.
"Janet's voting record is solid"
Adam are you serious dude?
Adam, can you disclose to us how much money Janet has paid you over the last 7 months?
She is your client right?
Art, you completely misread my post. The phrase "For Janet Nguyen nothing is no-fuss" refers to her almost non-stop political difficulties since she took office. You're not going to deny that self-evident fact, are you?
And enough with the Measure D/Santiago fire propaganda. That's a total canard. And your attacks on Bill Campbell are completely beside the point.
Mr. Probolsky:
Boy, if your paid "analysis" is as good as your infamous poll early last year on the 1st Supe Race, then I'd suggest that you take your hard-earn money and retire early from the political consultant business. You've lost all credibility in many people's eyes with this race and the subsequent dispute.
Janet Nguyen will lose the Viet vote, again, which will doom her chances for this next election. Trung Nguyen came out on top with the least amount of money, lowest name ID, and the least endorsements among the four so-called top tier candidates.
The GOP Central Committee should stay out of this dog fight until the dust truly settles, or it risks alienating a lot of folks who are, and will be instrumental with party building operations.
Supervisor Janet Nguyen will win re-election in June. The Republican Party Central Committee will rightly and appropriately back this effort and a Republican will hold this seat despite the voter registration numbers. Supervisor Janet Nguyen is a loyal Republican and level-headed Republicans recognize that.
Anon at 8:08am,
You're not drinking cool-aid, are you?
Whether you like it or not, Sup Janet Nguyen will face an uphill battle in Viet community. There'll be more than one challenger; they will come out from left and right. If a history lesson serves to remind you then you should look at the Doucher vs. Correa race in 2006. A not-well-known Republican, Otto Bade, cost Daucher's momentum and election. There's uncertainy about Nguyen's electability with many rumors, true and untrue. Challengers arising from the Viet community will be a big factor which no one can poll or predict the outcome. It isn't Republicans or Democrats and it'll be nasty.
BTW, if you think Adam Probolsky's prediction is accurate then you should ask any pollsters for their second opinion. Their answers will surprise you dearly.
Janet will face a very tough battle. She will not get 100% support from the Viet community under any circumstance. The hispanic community will largely support a democratic canidate although voter turnout will be important in the hispanic community. Her largest hurdle will be her conduct in office i.e. office remodels, election fraud allegations, a rather benign approach to Viet communist visits, support of OC Tresurer etc. To complicate matters her strongest achievement may be a double edged sword......establishing a welfare/social & health services office in her district. This move has seemed to raise the hackles of some old time conservatives. If you add Trung to this mix; the situation becomes very complicated and difficult for Janet.
Trung has integrity, good heart and many true republican friends.... and Janet has none.... other than perhaps ....paid political consultants like Adam Probolsky.
Adam Probolsky just does it because Janet's $$$. he is a hire gun and not reliable on any polls in the past.
I cannot trust anything Adam P says. He is a paid by Janet and does not disclose this fact. At the same time he touts Janet’s voting record while omitting the fact that she set up a nice little welfare office in Little Saigon, Supported the Treasurer, Supported the Sherriff, took illegal legal defense funds, hired a Democratic Gun Slinger, hired her sister as a "Senior Leg Aide when she has no political experience, I mean the list goes on and on.
Adam P has absolutely no credibility at all. He is strictly for hire. And will do anything to anyone for a buck. Hell I bet he doesn’t like Harmon because Harmon wouldn’t pay for Adams bogus services at outrageous prices.
Adam, I used to like you but now I see you for what you are. I’m going to advise any and all candidates, and public agencies to seek other vendors for the "services you provide".
Your product is tainted. Your credibility is in question. Your conservative credentials are questionable.
I agree. Adam Probolsky's service must be avoided. He brings big bag of lies to naive customers. Adam's promises are as good as Janet's bouncing checks.
#1 For a group of people that consider themselves educated, there are more than a few of you that can use a third grade refresher course in grammar and spelling.
#2 Show one instance where Janet has said “I support Mike Carona” or “I support Chriss Street”. It’s not there; you’re grasping at straws and doing a pretty weak job of it.
#3 Anon at 8:37, its KOOL-AID, not “cool-aid”. Every red-blooded American knows that.
Anon 7:23 PM,
Good grief!
Please stay on the issue which is whether Janet will face a challenger from the Viet community. Adam Probolsky paid too much attention on Team Trung and forgot the rest.
Janet will be the one to lose her job whether from a Republican/Democratic Vietnamese challenger, a Latino candidate, or even from a Caucasian candidate. She is finished.
