Field Poll Shows Romney Up in OC

Posted by: Nick Naylor | 01/27/2008 11:53 AM

Mitt Romney.jpg

Last week, Field Poll came out with their findings for the GOP Presidential race in California. On the whole, it showed McCain with a ~4 point lead statewide. But as this isn't a statewide blog, I thought I'd dig a little deeper and see what was going on behind the Orange Curtain.

Overall, in OC and San Diego (which Field Poll lumps into one region), Mitt Romney clings to a 1 point lead over John McCain.

Why the 5 point difference between the statewide totals and the OC/SD ones? Well, let's look at some of the other questions...

Among self-identified "Strong Conservatives," Romney's lead grows to 9.5 points.

He has a favorable/unfavorable rating in OC/SD of 69.5/13.5.

Furthermore, the Field Poll asked people who they thought "best represents what the Republican Party stands for." Romney came in tops, especially in OC where he blew out McCain 43.2-17.1. They also asked which candidate best represented change, which Romney also topped McCain 21-10.

If you've got a great image score, you've got a strong lead among "strong conservatives," you're the candidate people think best represents what the GOP stands for, and you still manage to be the candidate of change -- ya, that seems to be a recipe for success in a closed Republican Primary.

I don't know how the rest of the state will pan out, but I think that 10 days from now, it isn't too outlandish a bet to say OC will be Romney Country.

Oh Brother, what a choice. Mr. Quagmire vs. Mr. Empty Suit. With Il Duce lurking in the distant background.

BTW, Nick, love the blog handle.

Can some explain to me with a straight face how Romney "best represents change"? His political platform is virtually identical to what Bush has been doing for the last 7 years!

Now, if you want change, I can understand suggesting Ron Paul....

Redperegrine-- LOL!!!!!!!!

But didn't you forget your Cross of 1040, Boy Orator from the Arkansas River candidate?

Let's see, I would have voted for Duncan Hunter but he's not running anywhere near a win-campaign. I would have voted for Fred Thompson but he dropped out. So that leaves me with McCain or Romney. I like McCain's stand on the war on Terrorism, but I don't like his support of many many other things Mc Cain Feingold comes to mind.

I guess I'm voting for Mitt Romney. Sorry Hillary, you just don't do it for me!! LOL

Thank God this Moon Bat is ion the lead. That means the Dem Candidate who ever that may be will beat this weirdo hands down. I dont want my commander in chief wearing magic underwear.

You know, if Joe Lieberman were running for President, and you said the same thing about his "magic beanie," your comment would be rightly criticized for being antisemitic.

But Mormons -- who don't in any way believe their undergarments are "magic" -- are fair game, right?

Bigot.

Mr. Anonymous,

Do you mind that the Senate Majority Leader, Mr. Reid of Nevada, wears the same underwear? Or is it only Republican Mormons you want to smear?

The majority of OC christians are voting for Mike Huckabee in this GOP presidential race.....For those republicans who wants to meet Mike Huckabee in OC, lunch event is scheduled on Wed.Jan.30 at NewPort Beach.. for more info. call 949- 854-3497.

McCain is surprisingly doing very well in the polls thse days and at this point we are clueless as to who is going to win our GOP primary! amazing....

Romney is closing the gap with front runner McCain in California and some national polls show Huckabee is in statistical tie with McCain and Romney. We need to pray for all of our GOP candidates.

redperegrine said:

"We need to pray for all of our GOP candidates."

Well, we need to pray all right. For deliverance.

BRAVO! That's why I come here -- to see OC-specific views on stuff. Please keep posts like this coming!

Please keep your bigotry to yourself.

Plenty of folks around here have plenty of different ideas about Mitt. I, personally, think his too-perfect hair is evidence that he and John Edwards were created in the same secret laboratory run by a James Bond villain. But that's just me.

Romney's choice of garments simply isn't relevant. All religions have their own practices that make them distinctive. Try explaining transubstantiation or full-immersion Baptism to a foreign visitor. It can sound pretty whacked out. But these odd-sounding (to some) practices don't make Catholics or Baptists whacky. It makes them believers.

Mormons deserve the same basic respect due to any group that strives to follow the Golden Rule.

Don't forget about Huck. The only all around good candidate. If you are not satisfied with your choice, look at Huckabee. I think you'll like what you see. Just don't listen to the lies, look at the record.

redperegrine said:

tyler, your ecumenical attitude is commendable. However, I feel obliged to point out that certain religions have tenets that go far beyond requiring a simple and inarguable faith-belief. They require suspension of scientific, archaeological, and historical knowledge that has nothing to do with the various rituals that atheists may characterize as hocus-pocus.

I find myself questioning folks who demonstrate such a marked credulity.

John Jay, the first chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court once said, "Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privelege and interest, of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers."

Our forefathers understood the importance of voting for a Christian. They knew that in order to have a true sense of right and wrong, of good and evil, you must have men of God in leadership. Religion is an issue because it influences our decisions and our actions.

There is only one man who has demonstrated true Christianity in this presidential race and that is Mike Huckabee. He is a man of genuine conviction and strong Christian values. He has the integrity, values, ability and the experience to lead this nation. And he is also an incredible communicator!

I fully believe that if we elect Mike Huckabee as our president that future candidates for the presidency will not be comparing themselves to Ronald Reagan (awesome president that he was) but to Mike Huckabee.

Vote Christian America! Vote Huckabee!

MrWhipple said:

Redperegrine:

If you honestly believe that belief in Mormonism requires "require[s] suspension of scientific, archaeological, and historical knowledge," that demonstrates your lack of understanding of Mormonism more than it does the credulity of Mormons.

And I speak as a Mormon who is fairly well informed on scientific, archaeological, and historical matters related to my faith and its texts.

MrWhipple said:

And I might add that I am a Mormon who does not support Mitt Romney. In fact, he frightens me a great deal.

The same applies to Giuliani, McCain, and Huckabee, all of whom are big government, big war, big borrowing, big spending, big security-state RINOs.

If you want a real Republican, look to the successor of Robert Taft (who was called "Mr. Republican") and Barry Goldwater (who defined what it means to be Republican for a generation, including Ronald Reagan). That man is Ron Paul.

redperegrine said:

Well, Whip, when Mormons can prove any of their tenets about the establishment of a Judaic civilization in America through archaelology, DNA evidence, or historical (not cooked up) documentation, I'm ready to convert. Where do I sign up?

And BTW, what's with all the secrecy?

I know lots of Mormons who are actually pretty hard-headed and common sensical. Maybe they would make good presidents. I don't really know. Rightly or wrongly, I do judge people by the things they believe in.

BTW, I voted for Ron Paul too...

cra republican said:

Valuesvoter, I appreciate your comment about this GOP Primary election........ Ofcourse, we are proud of our founding fathers and their un-compromising trust in God. I would highly encourage all christian voters to vote for their value........ from the cross to our hearts. Mike Huckabee is my value-candidate.

Science can't prove anything; all it can do is provide evidence of varying strengths. And when one approaches a subject with incorrect preconceptions, one is not likely to find any evidence that will convince.

Since this is off topic to Romneyism, I'll simply refer you to this source and leave it at that:

No secrecy here. I'm happy to tell you anything Mormons believe.

Huckabee supporters: If only you knew how frightening Huckabee is to the rest of Americans who don't want to legislate your particular brand of morality. America is a religious nation, but it is not an evangelical Christian nation. Fortunately, Huckabee is unelectable to the 70% of Americans who aren't evangelical.

cra republican said:

Yes, Mr.Whipple our founding fathers risked their lives
in coming to America to worship Jesus freely.

Yes, it is easier to sin and be ashamed of confessing Jesus in the public places........ all because we have fear!

When will christians rise up again...... for our loved ones and for our America?

MrWhipple said:

CRA Republican:

It would be more accurate to say that some of the Founders came to America to worship Jesus. People came for many reasons, many of them related to economic and political issues.

Some Christians came and established colonies that only permitted one denomination, and those of other denominations were treated harshly.

Some Christians came and burned people they believe to be witches.

And most of the men involved in writing the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were not Christians in the evangelical mold. Thomas Jefferson was certainly not a Christian -- in fact, he was quite critical of Christianity. There is no mention of Jesus in any of the founding documents, and the closest we get is "nature's God." Most of these men were deists.

The United States is not a Christian nation. There are many Christians in it, and it was founded on religious principles, but the type of Christianity that now holds sway over the Republican Party didn't exist at the time of the Revolution.

Your type of theocracy more rightly belongs in Iran, where morality is enforced at the edge of a sword.

As a member of CRA, I'm upset that "CRA Republican" continues to post comments in opposition to positions the CRA has taken.

The CRA endorsed Mitt Romney.

This abuse of the CRA name should not stand.

cra republican said:

MrWhipple is greatly confused........ Iran is not a christian state......... and the sword does not represent christianity...... it's the cross.

Another small thing ... our pledge allegiance to the flag also contains the word God in the phrase "......one nation under God"

One more, the most interesting question is....... why does other nations around the globe think we are christian country???

The most recent national survey must be also WRONG because it said more than 80% of americans believed in God.

Anon.7:24, don't be offended by my personal support for Huckabee because we all know cra has given endorsement for fine conservative candidate Romney and I don't have any resentment against any of conservative GOP candidates...matter of fact, I have great respect for all of them.

redperegrine said:

And now that I think of it I would have a real problem voting for someone who believes the universe is 6000 years old. Now that's credulity.
