Yeah, but what if the resignation was part of an as yet unannounced plead deal?
Of course there is a deal in place. With the free legal aid being challenged, the possibility of loosing his pension and serving time, he had to quit. Isn’t it ironic he was given close to the same options he gave Hunt. I am glad we are turning the page on this guy. I hope the BOS has the good sense to appoint a new Sheriff who is mature enough to do the job.
News we have dreaded has been received. The eventes of this Firestorm has led Our Sheriff, Michael Carona, to resign his office.
In this difficult day, in this difficult time, it is perhaps well to ask what kind of a county we are and what direction we want to move in. You can be filled with bitterness and with hatred, or we can make an effort to understand that compassion and love will prevail.
For my fellow supporters of Sheriff Carona, I can only say that I feel in my own heart the same kind of feeling and we have to make an effort to understand, to go beyond.
My favorite poet was Aeschylus. He wrote: "In our sleep pain which cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart until, in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom through the awful grace of God."
What we need is not division; what we need is not hatred, but love and wisdom and compassion toward one another.
We've had difficult times in the past. We will have difficult times in the future. It is not the end of trying times.
But the vast majority of supporters of Sheriff Carona and the vast majority of Sheriff Carona's detractors in this county want to live and work together, want to improve the quality of their lives. Let us dedicate ourselves to what the Greeks wrote so many years ago: to tame the savageness of man and to make gentle the life of this world.
Let us dedicate ourselves to that, and say a prayer for Sheriff Carona, his family and the citizens of Orange County.
