Allan Mansoor will Step Down as Costa Mesa Mayor

I just learned that Allan Mansoor will soon voluntarily step down as Mayor of Costa Mesa right after the new year. He has placed the 'Selection of Mayor' in the upcoming City Council meeting on January 2, 2008.
Mansoor attracted national attention when his council-majority ordered the Costa Mesa Police Department to start enforcing federal immigration laws, which the Orange County Register yesterday reported that the decision resulted in 520 arrests and 360 deportations.
I'm not sure why Mansoor is stepping down from this ceremonial position, especially after a bitter and hard-fought campaign in 2006 to sustain his 3-2 majority on the Council. This also led me to assume that the next Costa Mesa Mayor will either be Eric Beaver or Wendy Leece.

Does this mean that Monsoor will step off of the council all together or will he just revert to regular city council member status?
He will revert to his regular city council member status.
Why Leece for Mayor? She just got on the Council. Foley and Beever elected in 2004(Dixon's been mayor before)so why not Beever followed by Foley followed by Leece? After all, it's ceremonial.
If Beaver doesn't want it, then it Wendy Leece will be selected, as she is part of that 3-2 Mansoor majority.
I can't imagine they would make Katrina Foley Mayor and let her use that as a campaign tool.
They arent going to let Katrina be Mayor! Katrina would use that to bolster her campaign against van Tran in Nov 2008 for the Assembly.
Mr. Mansoor is a class act. I'm sure he's got a great reason for stepping down, and I wish nothing but the best for him.
T-Hawk-- It's a ceremonial position that should be rotated. Everyone us elected the same way. If Costa Mesa wants to use the mayor's spot as a political football then step up and have a directly elected mayor like Orange, Garden grove, Anaheim, and Santa Ana. Fullerton, which used to play Costa Mesa's silly game, got smart and put the partisanship aside with Mayor Quirk. Beaver has just as much claim to it as Foley but leece should wait her turn.
Besides, the worm turns.
Bladerunner - I'm not advocating that a certain person should be selected Mayor, it's more of an assumption base on my observation of that divided City Council.
Are we sure Mansoor is actually stepping down? The term of mayor is one year in Costa Mesa. It's entirely possible the council could re-elect Mansoor.
Never mind. The term of Mayor is two years in Costa Mesa.
The Register reported on 12/27 that Mansoor is stepping down and has endorsed Eric Bever to replace him.

My guess is that Costa Mesa will have Mayor Eric Bever and Mayor Pro Tem Wendy Leece.

Blade, there were deals made behind the scenes by Shawn Nelson. Otherwise, no Quirk.
