Opening Round of Tom Daly for Supervisor?

Posted by: Jubal | 09/07/2007 6:12 PM

Tom_daly You know, it's never too early to start running for office. Or at least it's never too start blogging about who is running for office.

A reader sent me this e-mail that went out yesterday from the Democratic Party of Orange County:

Tom Daly is one of our greatest champions county-wide!

As the former mayor of Anaheim, Tom spearheaded the revitalization of downtown Anaheim, built parks, gymnasiums and community centers while lowering crime rates.

Currently, as our County Clerk-Recorder, Tom is a leader in protecting consumers from fraud and identity theft. His efforts and sponsorship led to the recent passage of a consumer protection law in California.
Please join fellow Democrats is supporting a man who is truly a servant of the people!

If one's going to run for office, the first thing you do is secure your base, and headlining a fund-raiser for the DPOC is a common sense move for Tom Daly.

Although Daly is a Democrat and has been a high-profile OC elected official for years, he's not a high-profile Democrat. The eminently-likable Mr. Daly has always been a candidate for non-partisan offices like Anaheim City Council and county Clerk-Recorder, which has played to his talent for bridging the partisan gap: attracting Republican voters while holding onto Democrats.

The big question is the extent to which he can leverage that ability in the 4th Supervisor District race in 2010 if a high-profile Republican like Sen. Dick Ackerman also seeks the seat, as he has indicated he might.

An Ackerman candidacy will place a partisan overlay on the race and make party affiliation more important than it has been in Tom's past contests -- with the exception of his 1998 mayoral re-election campaign, in which he decisively turned back a heavily-funded GOP effort to topple him.

Still, the stakes are higher at the Board of Supervisors. the 4th District is a GOP seat, and the determination to retain it will grow exponentially should a Democrat take the 1st Supervisor District next year.

We shall see. As it stands, with Sen. Ackerman only a potential candidate, the 4th District still looks like Tom Daly's to lose.

Daly understands and relates to that district better then anybody since Ralph Clark, whom Tom used to work for.

Of course, no one can blame him if he hangs around some more in his present position.

I think this has the potential to become a partisan race even if Ackerman decides to stay out. Particularly if the 1st District goes to a Democrat. I'm guessing the county employees will line up behind Daly in order to mute some of Supervisor Moorlach's influence over his peers. That alone could make the race intersting.
