OC Democrats Giving Award To AOCDS Prez Wayne Quint

Posted by: Jubal | 08/24/2007 10:26 AM

A reader sent this to me a couple of days ago:

The Democratic Party of Orange County's thirteenth annual Harry S Truman Awards Dinner will take place on Friday, October 19th at the Disneyland Hotel.

Our special key note speaker is presidential candidate, Sen. John Edwards!

Truman This year, our Harry S Truman Award recipient will be Hon. Larry Agran, Mayor Pro Tem of the city of Irvine. Larry has played a central role in Irvine and Orange County politics for almost 30 years. We are proud to recognize such a tremendous leader in our community.

The recipient of the Samuel Gompers Award will be Wayne J. Quint, Jr., President of the Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriff's. A proven leader, he is in the midst of a high-stakes battle with the Republican-dominated Board of Supervisors over their attempt to take away benefits previously won by our men and women in uniform.

Congratulations to Wayne. I think.

I wonder if Sam Gompers would like being compared to Wayne Quint? Certainly he would appreciate Quint's ability to intimidate elected officials (remember Wayne's visit to Newport Mayor, Steve Rosansky?), though striking out at other unions probably would have been frowned on (remember when Wayne threatened to bring prisoners to visit Joe Kerr at his house over Measure D?) Ironically, Gompers preferred the use of strikes instead of political action to get his message across. I'm sure Gompers would love to have earned Wayne's salary (now in excess of $150,000).

Hmmm. Last I checked in with Wayne, who is a friend of mine, he is a card-carrying Republican...

I am trying to imagine what kind of reaction we would get if the Orange County GOP gave an award to a Democrat?

Anyway, Wayne, you should go tell the party of Hillary to pound sand, and shove that Gompers award where the sun doesn't shine.

My ten cents.

Jon, if you're willing to vouch for this man's "Republican" credentials, then you are no better then he is. You couldn't name three things (just three!) Quint has done while president of AOCDS that supports the Republican platform & philosophy.

Quint being registered as a Republican no more makes him one than I standing a garage calling myself a car makes me a corvette.

What a joke!

This guy is a Rep? What is the DPOC thinking?

Jon,

Given how the Lincoln Club and their conservative base are supporting Moorlach, could you give us one reason why Wayne should embrace the philosophy of a group that supports breaking a contract attained through the bargaining process in good faith?

If that is your idea of ethical behavior I have to question your judgement and will give your advice all the credibility it derserves given how much I paid for it.

Mr. Fleishman of the Party of Tom Tancredo:

Did you consider that perhaps Mr. Quint is no longer a member of the Republican Party? You know, the party of Mr. Moorlach, Mr. Norby, Mr. Greenhut and fellow travelers whom have done their best to shove Quint out of the shrinking GOP tent?

redperegrine said:

BR, I don't think Greenhut is a Republican anymore. I believe he may be a Grover Cleveland independent.

Bladerunner said:

RP--I'm as behind the times like JF. I forgot about Greenhut's grand exit in a Sunday Register piece. Although I'm pretty sure that at least on the pension issue he will still caucus with the Supes and the Lincoln Club.

Fleischman:

You are right. The OC GOP would not ever consider giving an award it considers significant to a Dem. Doing so would show class and a spirit of inclusion and participation. Something that I gather from your tone and the actions of your local heroes is not something folks like you subscribe to. I do believe the mainstream republicans of Orange County would be proud to have the likes of Mr. Quint in their corner. I know I would.

This is a guy who not only has done the job of a street cop (a decorated one I might add) working some of the toughest beats this county has to offer, but he has been there 24/7 for the orphans and widows of our slain law enforcement officers. He has done this without regard to their color, creed or political affiliation.

You, and other like thinking individuals, could perhaps learn a bit from Mr. Quint’s actions.

Congratulating the guy would show class. I’ll leave it at that.

The Democratic Party of Orange County at its annual Harry S. Truman Awards Dinner recognizes outstanding achievement in support of working people in Orange County with the Samuel Gompers Award.

The Samuel Gompers Award is presented in recognition of individual support for labor and party affiliation is not a consideration in the selection of the honoree.

We recognize that not all people supporting labor are registered to vote as Democrats. The choice of a party of registration, or to not designate any party, is an individual decision.
