Nuclear power for California

Posted by: Chuck DeVore | 07/23/2007 11:00 PM

This news story appeared on ABC 7 in the Bay Area today regarding our nuclear power initiative efforts.  You can see the video by looking in the video box to the left for the segment entitled, “State Considers New Nuclear Power Methods…”  See: http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=politics&id=5492403.  The piece was shot today in my Sacramento office minutes before a meeting at the California Chamber of Commerce organized to begin building the broad coalition of support we need to lift California’s nuclear power moratorium.  California is one of only six states with such a ban on building new, safe, clean and reliable power plants.

A personal note, on the right side of this shot you can see the photos of President Reagan with Diane, Jennie and me.

For more information about our nuclear power initiative, see: www.PowerForCalifornia.com.

State Considers New Nuclear Power Methods
To Decrease Greenhouse Gases

Excerpted from a TV interview transcript from ABC 7 News KGO on July 23, 2007.

Jul. 23, 2007 (KGO) - For more than 30-years, California has had a moratorium on building any new nuclear power plants, but that could be about to change. The concern over greenhouse gases is driving a renewed call for nuclear power.

Southern California assemblyman Chuck Devore is working on a ballot initiative to lift the state's ban on nuclear power plants. He believes the time has come again for this clean-power option.

Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, (R) IRVINE: "Public sentiment has shifted dramatically in favor of nuclear power in recent years because I think people understand, I think perhaps better than the elected representatives, that if global warming and climate change is a serious problem, then we need to have some serious solutions."

Presidential candidate John McCain mentioned it in a campaign speech in San Francisco last week.

Sen. John McCain, (R) ARIZONA, July 16, 2007: "I believe nuclear power must be a part of any equation if you're going to seriously address the issue of greenhouse gas emissions."

Devore's initiative would prohibit building new reactors in earthquake-prone areas. The initiative needs about half-a-million signatures to make the June 2008 ballot.
