Former House Speaker Ray Sansom received some good news today. After being indicted in May, Circuit Judge Terry Lewis has dismissed the felony official misconduct charges against Sansom, ruling the charges are unconstitutional.

"It is natural to want to punish those involved," Judge Terry Lewis wrote. "But not every wrongful conduct is a crime. Sometimes the remedy for such conduct must be political rather than judicial. This is one of those situations." said Judge Lewis.

Sansom, along with former college president Bob Richburg and Panhandle developer Jay Odom were accused of felony official misconduct and perjury in arranging for a $6 million airplane hangar when Sansom was head of the House budget committee.

This afternoon State Attorney Willie Meggs was unsure if his office would seek an appeal. "I think we need to determine if the statute is constitutional or unconstitutional."

Another Sansom scandal rocked the Republican Party of Florida (RPOF), after it was discovered that Sansom had consumed over $173,000 from 2006-2008 on his Republican Party of Florida issued AMEX card.

Stephen Dobson, Sansom’s lawyer said, "We're elated with the judge's decision. We have argued all along that you cannot falsify an appropriations act. The judge agreed.”

All three men will still face perjury charges.
