Obama Back-Tracking on Campaign Promise
By Saulo G. Londono | 07/16/09 | 02:25 PM EDT | 0 Comments
Since the campaign season, then-candidate Obama made no qualms about telling people that his healthcare plan would not force Americans into the public program. Any reasonable voter would take away from the statement, that if he/she chooses to use private insurers, that he/she would be able to.
In the latest of his cynical moves, President Obama is now back-tracking on that promise. Even less than a month ago members of Obama's cabinet were still using the same talking points:
The problem with this specific talking point, is that it's just not true. According to Investor's Business Daily, it only takes 16 pages for the Democrats to get to the real goal of this health care plan: to force everyone into the public plan. Let's take a look at Section 102 of the Democratic Proposal's final draft:
SEC 102: PROTECTING THE CHOICE TO KEEP CURRENT COVERAGE
(1) LIMITATION ON NEW ENROLLMENT.-
(A) IN GENERAL.- Except as provided in this paragraph, the individual health insurance issuer offering such coverage does not enroll any individual in such coverage if the effective date of coverage is on or after the first day of Y1.
For those who are having trouble interpreting this legal mambo jambo, this section effectively prohibits (1) anyone who is currently privately insured from switching providers; and (2) anyone who is not currently insured through a private provider from doing so in the future. They consider "Y1" as the day the legislation becomes effective by the way.
Are you kidding me? How can any Democrat tell anyone with a straight face, that this plan will allow us to "keep our doctors" as the President and his advisors continuously preach?
I'll be the first one to admit that I will not read all 852 pages of this document, but clearly someone should. If it only took 16 pages to find this gem, how many others will we find in the last 836?
