NY-23 and LA-2 are both teachable moments
By Dr. Richard Swier | 11/08/09 | 01:23 PM EDT | 1 Comment
This is why Americans don't trust politicians. There are no more shining examples of politicians throwing all of us under the debt bus than the actions of two freshman members of Congress. One is a Democrat and the other a Republican.
The first teachable moment comes from Republican Joseph Quang Cao, LA-2, the sole Republican to vote for the massive Obama/Pelosi healthcare bill. TheHill.com reports:
According to a written statement released later that night, Cao explained that Obama had promised to help out the lawmaker’s district still devastated from Hurricane Katrina.
“Today, I obtained a commitment from President Obama that he and I will work together to address the critical health care issues of Louisiana including the FMAP crisis and community disaster loan forgiveness, as well as issues related to Charity and Methodist Hospitals,” Cao wrote.
What is frightening about this statement is that Cao believed that President Obama would not help the people of New Orleans unless he voted for Obamacare. That in itself shows how government power trumps the people. Cao sold out to get Obama's support and thereby be re-elected rather than vote on principle. Cao vote was even defended by Rep. Don Young (R-AR). Cao is now embracing President Obama just as Governor Crist did in February of this year on the largest spending bill in our history. I wonder if Cao will denounce ever making this vote the same way Crist now denies he supported the stimulus bill?
The second teachable moment is provided by Congressman Bill Owens NY-23. Moments after being sworn in the GouverneurTimes.com reports:
A spokesman for Congressman Owens indicated correctly that Mr. Owens had recanted his solid position against public option later in the campaign, clarifying that he did not wish public option to be a 'litmus test' for the Health Reform bill and that on Oct. 30th, several days prior to the election, in a debate had stated that he generally supported the public option as it was now written (at that time.)
Mr. Owens also indicated during his campaign that he was firmly opposed to cutting Medicare benefits, taxing health care benefits, and increased taxes on the middle class in any way as you can see clearly in the screen shot below, taken directly from Mr. Owens' campaign website.
As the GourverneurTimes.com points out Owens broke four campaign promises in his first hour of Congress.
Both of these men got elected telling voters one thing and upon entering office did something completely different. This goes beyond lying, this is a fundamental weakness of our political system. Men and women elected to serve the will of the people and then ignoring the people to vote for what appears to be in their own best interest. It is all about money and power, our money and taking power from you and me and moving it to Washington, D.C. What is amazing is they, with a straight face, say they are doing this to meet the needs of their constituents.
Republicans and Democrats alike have betrayed you and me. Both parties are corrupt, untrustworthy and only interested in winning at any cost. Virtue is dead in American politics. The only way to stop this is punish them by voting them out. Make them pay for their betrayal by voting them out of office.

Well, for what it's worth, Cao wasn't going to get re-elected no matter how he voted on the bill, because his district is majority African-American and he's not only a Republican, but Vietnamese. Identity politics and the letter by his name will put him out of office, not his votes. And now that Owens lied his ass off to every voter in NY-23, he's going to get beat next year as long as the Republicans nominate neither Dede Scozzafava nor Doug Hoffman to run against him.
