The Political Cycle

Although liberals are basking in their many victories, and currently control Congress and the White House, nothing is permanent in politics.  Already we are seeing signs of hubris and some big mistakes being committed by a number of Democrats.  If they continue to "screw up" in the spheres of domestic and foreign policy, the electorate and the media could begin to turn on them.  Already, there are plenty of moderate to conservative Democrats that are experiencing buyers remorse.

If the Congress and Obama continue to impose a quasi-socialism on the country, freedom loving Americans will resist and oppose dictates and mandates that abridge their freedoms.  Obama conveniently forgets that government caused most of the economic problems we are in now, and further borrowing and spending will only exacerbate the problem.  Permanent tax cuts across the board can trigger an economic turnaround.

Conservatives and the GOP ought to hammer home this point to the public.  They must continue to articulate and practice the virtues of family values, personal responsibility, individual liberty, limited government, border security, and muscular national security.  If this begins to resonate with most Americans, gains can be made at the local, state, and national levels in 2010 and 2012.

Moreover, there are positive signs now for conservatives and Republicans.  Michael Steele is shaking up the RNC, and Americans are witnessing how leftward leaning Obama really is.  There are plenty of conservative leaders at the local, state, and national levels.  In fact, Republicans have 22 governors, 24 if you add Guam and Puerto Rico.  In the House, there are 178 GOP members and that number can grow if they stick to the core values of liberty and private sector solutions.

The Senate has 41 Republicans, and hopefully that can move to 42 if Norm Coleman ekes out a triumph in Minnesota.  In addition, there are a few "strong on national security" Democrats such as Joe Lieberman to help the cause at times.  In Obama's cast of advisors and Cabinet members, hopefully Gates, Gregg, and LaHood can knock some sense into Obama's head.  Intelligence and security advisors such as Blair, Brennan, and Jones can point Obama in a more realistic direction.

Democrats are pounding their chests and feeling quite invincible, but just wait.  They'll make mistakes just as plenty of Republicans did over the past few years, and public opinion can turn gradually, or rapidly.  If the mistakes escalate, the honeymoon will be brief and political capital will be squandered.  Conservatives understand that individuals and communities best solve most problems, and that's why the political cycle can turn in their favor in the near future.
