Netanyahu In: Clock Ticking
By Michael Kerr | 02/20/09 | 10:51 AM EDT | 0 Comments
Likud party leader Benjamin Netanyahu will form the new Israeli government. An endorsement from Avigdor Lieberman, head of the Yisrael Beiteinu party, sealed the deal. The new government will be especially significant given pivotal events in Gaza and throughout the Middle east.
United Nations officials acknowledged this week that Iran has enough enriched uranium to produce a nuclear bomb. Given Iran's stated goal of "wiping Israel off the map" these new developments will likely put Iran at the top of Mr. Netanyahu's "to do" list. The Likud party leader has also said that the Hamas government in Gaza must be stopped to ensure Israel's longterm security.
Netanyahu will have six weeks to form a coalition. Lieberman has said that he would like a government including the three big parties, Likud, Kadima and Yisrael Beiteinu. While Netanyahu is likely to extend an olive branch to other parties, the new government is sure to signal a more hawkish approach to existing and emerging threats throughout the region.
