Endless Folly in D.C.

George Santayana once noted that folks who forget the past are condemned to repeat it. This truth certainly applies to Obama and most of the Congressional Democrats. Obama will sign the "stimulus" bill on Tuesday in Denver. He is trying to repeat the mistakes of FDR, hoping to get a different result. Some folks never learn from history. If the gargantuan spending package doesn't have much of a recovery effect, will Obama add another trillion or two to an escalating national debt?
If liberals are so bound and determined to boost the economy, why don't they spend their own dollars to jumpstart it, instead of wasting the money of other folks on such folly? The politicians in D.C. are good at redistributing other people's money, even though it does little to trigger greater investing and spending in the overall economy. A tax and spend philosophy has never generated prosperity, and it never will, period.
A tougher choice for the Democrats would have been inaction. This would allow the economy to right itself with the energy and ingenuity of the American people, but the Dems usually steer clear of difficult decisions. All these bailouts and recovery plans end up punishing successful people, and rewarding business and individual failures. The parasites in society will reap the benefits, while the most productive folks will end up footing the bill.
It's laughable to see the Democrats lecture Americans and business executives on how to live and spend money, even as they practice a lavish lifestyle. Apparently, the Dems don't even recognize their staggering hypocrisy. If they don't like the way corporate heads spend bailout money, don't give it to them in the first place!!
Last week, host David Gregory of "Meet the Press," asked a panel why there is so much corruption in D.C. Barney Frank blamed it on the voters who don't hold Congress to a higher standard. Uh, wrong answer, Frank. Our representatives are supposed to be serving the public, not the other way around. Although Americans can try to hold their feet to the fire, members of Congress should hold themselves and each other to high ethical standards.
Although socialism has been discredited everywhere as a colossal failure, the Dems don't want to hear about it. Their monstrous egos falsely believe that one more stab at it just might be the trick. Man, are they in for a rude awakening in a few months, or years! How can the liberals in D.C., most of whom are lawyers, believe they can control or manage the economy? They lack even a basic understanding of economics, free markets, and human nature.
The more that the Feds try to intervene in the economy, the worse it will get. An explosion of mandates and all the strings attached to them will stifle incentives for risk taking, employment growth, business startups, and productivity. A better path would be restraint from taking advantage of a crisis (Rahm Emanuel), let the markets sort out, and offer a broader range of tax credits and cuts.
More liberal folly involves the Census and the Fairness Doctrine. Rahm Emanuel (yes, him again) wants the Census takers at Commerce to report to him. Obviously, this unconstitutional power grab could affect the electoral map, and steer more government goodies to blue states. Can you believe some Dems, including Bill Clinton, are still discussing the resurrection of the misnamed Fairness Doctrine?
Liberals aren't satisfied with control over most newspapers and TV stations. They want to dictate the programming at radio stations, and other media outlets. Go ahead, liberals, just try to shut down conservative voices, and you will face a backlash and blowback the likes of which you have never experienced. If you want to commit political suicide, go ahead and try to monopolize the media.
The Democrat follies in D.C. never end because the arrogant clowns running Congress these days live in a fantasy world. Many of the Dems are making the fatal error of putting their own interests above the national interest, and above the aspirations of the American people. They still haven't learned that one should never, ever underestimate the fury and intelligence of the American people.
