One Man, One Bomb, One Disaster

It is believed that Iran now has enough fissile material for one bomb. One bomb is one bomb too many. Ask any citizen of Tel Aviv. One bomb is hundreds of thousands of dead men, women and children. One bomb plus one madman can equal a world forever changed.
The question that is currently being asked is, "Is it too late?" Often we are told we can't put the genie back in the bottle. That statement may be true, but you can blow the bottle of the face of the earth. The Israeli's say they are ready to strike. We must not let them. The United States needs to take action against the Republic of Iran's nuclear facilities, and their ability to make war.
If Israel takes action- it will lead to an all out Arab Israeli war. The Israeli's are out numbered and outgunned by the their hostile neighbors. They are also better trained and better equipped. The Israeli's would must likely win this war- but not after paying a tremendous price. Rockets would rain down on Israel- the end result would not be much different than a nuclear strike. Israel as we know it would be wiped from the face of the map. As, Israel's closest ally, the United States can not allow this to happen.
If we are to preserve our allies right to existence, we must act. We don't need to commit ground troops- we need not conquer Iran. We do need to remove their ability to make war. President Elect Obama will not do this. If Israel is to remain a beacon of democracy in the Middle East, President Bush needs to act before he leaves office.
Many will say that a price will be paid by Israel either way. They will add that a price may also be paid by the United States. Iran has said they have sleeper cells here. We can, and must, handle both.
To safeguard Israel, we need to rely on the Shock and Awe campaign that worked so well in the beginning of the Iraq conflict. This time we should not commit ground troops. After B-2 bombers remove Iranian command and control facilities from the face of the earth, we should commit our less stealthy aircraft to the campaign- taking out every military target in Iran. We must also supplement Israel's anti missile weapons with AEGIS cruisers. We should get as many SM-3 standard missile carrying AEGIS cruisers to the area as possible. Though we are still testing the SM-3's anti missile capabilities, the results so far have been spectacular. 10 out 12 targets have been destroyed in tests of the SM-3 missile in the ABM role.
Moving SM-3 equipped Aegis Cruisers to the area will protect not only Israel, but also our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Destruction of Iran's military capability will take more than one day. The likely Iranian response will be twofold. First, Iran will hit Israel and US forces in the Middle East with missile attacks. The Aegis cruisers and indigenous Israeli capability should be able to handle most Iranian missiles.
The second Iranian response will be to use terrorist assets to strike it's enemies. To prevent this, we must shut down Iran's borders with Iraq and Afghanistan. Army and Marine air assets would be the best bet for this mission. Apache and Super Cobra helicopters must be deployed to the borders to repel any incursion. They would be hunting for insurgents, not mass troop movements. Both aircraft have been proven effective in this role. Domestic law enforcement and border patrols must be on alert. If Iranian terror cells do exist here, they likely came up through Mexico. This will be an FBI engagement, as much as it will be a military engagement.
The mainstream media is pushing for direct negotiations between the Obama administration and the Ayatollah Khamenei regime. This will only accomplish one thing- it will give Iran time to refine it's new Uranium to weapons grade level. The Iranian regime is not going to change it's ways. They have no reason to. The only way to bring them to the bargaining table is to remove their capability to wage war on their neighbors. Such action will also remove the air of futility from the average Iranians dream of Democracy. Opposition groups may rise up. Such action would not be counted on- the United States has been burned by counting on indigenous forces rising up before. Our mission must be the destruction of the Iranian ability to threaten it's neighbors. The mission is not only just, it is eminently achievable.
