Alaka Sen. Ted Stevens should have been toast. He was indicted on corruption charges. The trial is still going. Famous for bring pork from D.C in a time when pork is no longer a selling point, and people were just tired of the 80 year old Senator from Alaska. His UCLA ties notwithstanding.

The Democrats had recruited a great candidate Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich. He opened up a double digit lead on Stevens in the race and then as they say in the old Batman series, BLAM!

McCain picked the popular Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Stevens polling immediately got closer showing Stevens down by four points. As recent Rasmussen poll had Stevens up by a point. If he is acquitted he may win. Because of Sarah Palin.

The irony is Stevens opposed Palin every step of the way. He is one of those pillars of the Republican Party that thwarted reform and tried to stop her. Now her presence is may save his political skin. Amazing.
