California Republicans Propose Spending Cuts & Borrowing To Solve Budget Impass

Certainly the thought of borrowing against the lottery and acquiring more funds from local governments is distasteful. But raising taxes in an already soggy economy will spell devastation. Republicans are also proposing the state government take $349 million from a fund that cities use for redevelopment.
But the major tool with which Republicans propose balancing the budget is -- wait for it -- SPENDING CUTS. Social programs from across the entire spectrum are earmarked for cuts and the public funding for the Big Labor's "studies center" at the University of California will be eliminated. The Miguel Contreras UC Labor Institute creates bogus studies to bake up the use of union-only Project Labor Agreements and trains labor on how to beat Republicans in elections. Though a mere $6 million a year, the UC Labor Institute has long been the benchmark of out-of-control special interest spending in Sacramento.
