Democratic Party Activists Speak Out On Developments Regarding John Edwards

Posted by: El Caudillo | 08/08/2008 1:26 PM

With today's bombshell news of 2008 Democratic Party presidential candidate John Edwards admitting an extra-marital affair (a romantic liason which the former candidate and retired US Senator had previously long denied), Republican Party activists were quick to pounce on the hypocrisy of Democrat demagogues like Edwards. Click here to read a brief Red County entry on this developing story.

But how are Edwards' troubles playing among Democratic Party activists? Especially the cadre of the party's left-wing internet activists who rallied around Edwards' candidacy just months ago.

Well, eminent Democratic Party blog Dailykos - an early and strident cheerleader for the Edwards campaign - has reacted swiftly to the news that one of their favored candidates has been caught lying - lying while he was actively pursuing their party's nomination for the highest office in the nation.

A common thread lies in Democratic frustration at John Edwards - they don't care about his lack of character or personal behavior, they are concerned that news of this magnitude could have hurt Democratic Party chances in November, had Edwards been their party's nominee

Here is a sampling of Democratic anger at John Edwards as written by members of DailyKos' online community:

"John Edwards is an embarrassment to his party and, of course, to Elizabeth." ("BarbInMD)

"Well, since he didn't love her, it's okay that he made a run for the Democratic Party's nomination knowing that he was lying through his teeth about this. And a Friday news dump on the day of the opening ceremonies of the Olympics? Coward." ("BarbInMD")

"I have zero respect for his self-serving a**." ("georgia10")

"It is simply much more plausible that Edwards is a lying sack, through and through." (Tryptophan")

"You're crushing me John.  Why'd you do it?" ("Uncle Moji")

...And that's what a few of John Edwards' former friends think. These are the folks who campaigned vigorously for him as their party's 2004 vice presidential nominee. Many embraced his 2008 left-wing campaign message of socialized medicine, an end to a war in which he once supported, and his presidential campaign's hiring of radical anti-Christian bloggers to connect with the Democratic Party's growing militant atheist constituency.

To be fair, many Democratic internet activists are also blasting the media for reporting on the former senator's "private life" and have claimed that there is no public interest in what the rakish Edwards does in his own time. Many Democratic activists are criticizing their fellow liberals for their anger at Edwards, apparently unaware that Democratic anger is based more on political strategy than any feeling of disppointment in the sentaor's moral fortitude.

The John Edwards telenovela shows that for Democrats, morality, honesty, and marriage are relative and evolving terms. Winning elections and implementing a left-wing agenda is all that matters...and the only relationship that really matters is the matrimony of a a left-wing social agenda and electable candidates.
