North to Alaska!
This Tuesday, voters will vote in crucial Republican Party primaries in America's Last Frontier - the great state of Alaska.
In the race for Alaska's lone United States House of Representatives seat, 35-year Republican Party incumbent Don Young faces an aggressive challenge from two credible candidates. One of the candidates is the state's popular lieutenant governor Sean Parnell. Parnell has waged an intense battle to wrestle the GOP nomination from Young, who Parnell claims has strayed too far from conservative roots. Lt. Governor Parnell points to Don Young's support for tax increases and increased government spending to make his case that the incumbent has spent too many years in Washington.
Young is countering that Sean Parnell is a captive of Washington, DC-based special interest organization Club For Growth. The Club For Growth is a political action committee that openly backs fiscal conservative, anti-tax candidates. Records show that many campaign donors to Parnell are also contributors to the Club For Growth and are from outside Alaska. Sean Parnell states that the Club For Growth is backing him due to his record of fiscal conservativism and common sense leadership.
Don Young bolstered his own conservative credentials with endorsements from Texas Congressman Ron Paul, the National Rifle Association PAC and pro-life organizations.
Recent public polling show the contest very close between the two men with a third candidate, State Representative Gabrielle LeDoux, stuck in a distant third place. The winner of the Republican Party nomination will face likely Democratic Party nominee Ethan Berkowitz, a former state lawmaker in November.
In the race for Alaska's US Senate seat, indicted Republican incumbent Ted Stevens is expected to easily fend off his intra-party competition. Stevens, who was charged last month in a political corruption probe, steadfastly maintains his innocence. In Tuesday's GOP primary, Stevens is being challenged by two candidates, a wealthy businessman and a former state lawmaker.
Despite the well-publicized indictment, public polling shows Ted Stevens handily winning the race for the Republican Party US Senate nomination. However, surveys at this point suggest significant strength of the likely Democratic Party nominee, former Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, in a November match-up. Stevens trails Begich by double digits in several recent polls
Nationwide, two House GOP incumbents have already lost their bids for re-nomination. Will they be joined by two more?
Stay tuned.
