Hot Air or Did Germany strike a gas deal with Iran? is the rhetorical question asked by Benjamin Weinthal in an article published by the Jerusalem Post July 30, 2008
In the article, the reporter quotes Dr. Johannes Gerster, head of the German-Israeli friendship society and a former CDU member of parliament as saying: "This business deal is not compatible with the words of the chancellor in the Knesset, and the gas contract should be rescinded". He also presents the German's perspective by quoting Holger Beutel, a spokesman for the government office: "Because the equipment would be built here and then sent to Iran, that work does not fall under any existing sanctions involving Iran,"
Is this a matter of semantics? Is this much ado about nothing? Or might this be the European approach much preferred by Senator Obama?
