Why an Obama-Clinton Ticket Is Unlikely

Now that Obama has effectively clinched the Democratic nomination, many Democrats are clamoring for an Obama-Clinton ticket in order to unify the party. According to a recent poll done by CNN/Opinion Research 54% of Democrats would like to see an Obama-Clinton ticket, while 43 percent disagreed (Click Here for Poll). An interesting sidenote is that Democrats' opinion concerning this matter is largely divided among gender lines, with 60% of Democratic women favoring Clinton for the VP slot, while only 46% of Democratic men having the same opinion. While it appears that in order to have a strong ticket in November Obama must choose Clinton, it looks like neither he nor Senator Clinton is interested in such a ticket.
One reason that Obama wouldn't want Clinton on the ticket with him is that he couldn't effectively campaign on "change" if he were to bring her on the ticket, due to her attempts to bring back the 90's. Another reason is that with all of Obama's dirty laundry being aired, he doesn't need Hillary's added to it. Combine Obama's associations with anti-American wackos such as Rev. Wright, Fr. Phleger, and Bill Ayers, and all of the old Clinton scandals, and there's a good chance that could seriously hurt the Democrats chances in November. While Obama-Clinton may be the best of both worlds for Democrats, it certainly will be for Republicans as well when it comes to negative campaign ads.
The reason Hillary Clinton may not want to be on the ticket is that she would probably prefer to return to the Senate and try to become Senate Majority Leader. It appears that Clinton is only interested in having a top position in whatever branch of government she is serving in. Another thing to consider is that if she were part of an Obama presidency, she would be 68 in 2016, and may be considered too old. If she is part of an Obama presidency that is unsuccessful, then all hopes of her ever becoming president will be gone. Hillary may want to stay off of the ticket, which may cost Obama the female vote and help McCain. This will allow her to take another shot at the presidency in 2012. Not only that, but if Obama loses in November, it would be unlikely that the Democrats would nominate someone who lost four years earlier to run again. This way Hillary gets a second chance with no serious competition.
