Fix the CRP. Get Rid of Duf Sundheim AND Ron Nehring!

Posted by: Slotur | 02/20/2008 12:19 PM

There is no one and I mean no one that thinks the CRP is a well oiled machine that is tanned and ready to take on the Democrats in California.

The CRP can start by getting rid of two people that stand in the way of progress.

Step 1: Get rid of Duf Sundheim. Duf the PAST Chairman of the California Republican Party needs to get a day job. During his last year in office he suckered the board into taking a $3 million loan. He ran up another million in debt. He secured promises to get it paid off and instead he has undermined all efforts to get it paid. Why?

Well, the rumors are that he needs to be paid. See Duf got comfortable as CRP chair because others were paying him to do it. Now he taps some of those folks to "takeover" the party. It's easy money, you just have to cause trouble and that he is doing well. Solutions hurt takehome pay.

Please someone pay him to step down and leave the party.

Step 2: Get rid of Nehring. Nehring is a great trainer. We should free him from the duties of Chair so he could go train people. He isn't cut out to be Chairman.

Is there any major donor to the party he has asked for money? From the beginning it is well known in CRP mucky muck circles that he won't fundraise. This is disastrous for a party that has the kind of debt he inherited. On top of that after hiring illegal aliens for staff, he became Mr. Cautious. This is not the time for cautious. It's like being cautious while your drowning, you will still drown. It's time for someone that is willing to swim and Nehring is not it.

Step 3: Find a Party Chair that can raise money and deal with volunteers. I think we should tap some retired legislators. Former State Senator John Lewis would be a possibility. Former State Senator Jim Brulte or Assemblyman Fred Aguiar could be possibilities. Curt Pringle, the Republican Assembly Speaker we had is too busy being Mayor of Anaheim. But you get the idea. Someone that understands Donors, Conservatives and oh lets just say it leadership would be great.

Then we can deal with fundraising, voter registration, organization and messaging that is currently being ignored.

See, fixing the party is as easy as 1-2-3.

Slotur: I agree that all of those steps toward fixing the party are necessary and need to be done now. However, these are short-term solutions that do not address the institutional-level problems at the CRP, which are the root of everything that is wrong. One need not look further that the 2008 CA Primary results to see how out of touch the CRP is WITH ITS OWN MEMBERS!!!...to say nothing of California voters as a whole. Until the CRP figurs out how to represent its own membership, the current problems will persist. Yes, Duf and Ron need to go...now. However, given that there will be little difference between who elected them and who would elect Nehring's successor, how much change could we reasonable expect simply by deposing the Chairman and Immediate Past-Chair? Even if we were to rally everyone behind a really great consensus candidate, then as soon as they termed out, it would be back to business as usual.
