Today Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour named Congressman Roger Wicker as his choice to replace Trent Lott in the United State Senate.Roger Wicker will serve until a special election on November 4, 2008 in which he is expected to be a candidate. Should he win, Wicker will serve out the rest of Lott's term, which is at the end of 2012.
By resigning at the end of 2007, Lott gave his successor ample time to build up name ID and fundraise to keep this seat in the GOP column. Although Mississippi is heavily Republican, if Wicker can build a sizable war chest for next year's election, he wont have to drain any resources from the NRSC.
