Advances in technology allow them to operate the business from their beach home. Their four grown children are scattered across the country and Nansen enjoys keeping tabs on their adventures.

Running Scared: Baird Backs Out of Town Hall

By Nansen Malin | 08/31/09

Brian Baird continues to sink deeper into the partisan pit sands. In doing so, he's losing any remaining semblance of being a moderate. A few weeks back, I managed to join one of his "tele-town hall" calls, after a source sent me the call-in info.  Last week I blew the top off Baird's sham tele-town halls. Among other questionable practices, Baird intentionally keeps the date, time, and call-in info for his... read more »

Baird's 'Tele-Town Halls' Appear to be a Sham

By Nansen Malin | 08/31/09

Our S.W. Washington Congressman has taken a drubbing in the press for his initial decision not to hold town halls. As cover, he tried lashing out. He then had to apologize. Now, even his apology has seemingly backfired. At the moment, he needs to be perceived as reaching out, and re-building bridges he burnt to a charred crisp. Baird's first attempt at preempting criticism by trying to short-circuit the democratic process not only failed, it... read more »

Baird Plunges to New Depths

By Nansen Malin | 08/20/09

Southwest Washington Congressman Brian Baird just doesn't get it. After finally apologizing for outrageous remarks he made last week about opponents of ObamaCare, and agreeing to schedule town halls to hear from constituents, Baird reverted to the rhetorical equivalence of inserting both feet into his mouth. At a lunch meeting of the Vancouver Rotary, several sources confirm that Baird cracked: "If there's a Ryder truck parked outside,... read more »

Brian Baird: A Junket Junky?

By Nansen Malin | 08/20/09

It's been a rough few news weeks for 3rd C.D. Brian Baird.  Tomorrow, he goes on with Lars Larson to do a radio town hall, which he reluctantly agreed to after weathering several days of negative press. Ahead of what's sure to be a debut wrought with fireworks, I thought it fair to review some of the junketeering Representative Baird has been accused of recently. In comparison to his reluctance to hold town halls--and his associated... read more »

Baird’s Apology Rings Hollow, True Colors Revealed

By Nansen Malin | 08/13/09

Brian Baird issued a half-hearted apology today for his bizarre and reprehensible slurs directed at opponents of ObamaCare.  As someone who has worked with local Democrats in the past, including the Congressman, I was the first to demand an immediate apology days ago.  It finally came today, albeit several days late, and many words short of being sincere. (You can read the rambling letter online here.) Let's recap: if you are... read more »

Going Stealth in Longview: Real Astro-Turf Revealed

By Nansen Malin | 08/12/09

Something big is happening in the 3rd C.D.  That was my gut feeling after I began hearing about a "stealth town hall event" in the works supposedly featuring our state's two U.S. Senators Murray and Cantwell along with Congressman Brian Baird, to be hosted somewhere in the 3rd Congressional District. Probably just embellishment, I thought.  If both Senators were coming to Southwest Washington, it would obviously be all over... read more »

Twitter- To Follow Back or Not To Follow Back

By Nansen Malin | 06/08/09

I encourage and believe that successful Twitter users should follow back, plus a little more.  The idea of being a center of influence begins with stretching outside of your circle.  To begin, it is simply good manners to respond to a relationship by allowing 2 way communication. You can only have that if you follow back.  One of the essential benefits of following back is the ability to direct message.  (If the trust of a... read more »
