In Memoriam: Earline Mountjoy
By Allen Wilson | 11/04/09 | 02:02 PM EDT | 0 Comments
It is deeply sad to learn the passing of Earline Mountjoy, wife of former State Senator Dick Mountjoy (R-Monrovia, District 29).
Republican Party of Los Angeles County Chairman Jane Barnett just sent out an e-mail communication about the sad news:
I am sad to report that Earline Mountjoy, wife of Senator Dick Mountjoy passed away a few days ago.
Earline was born in Searcy, Arkansas, and moved with her family to California when she was a few weeks old.
Shortly before graduating from Monrovia Arcadia Duarte High School (MAD) at 18 years of age, Earline married her high school sweetheart, Dick Mountjoy. They were happily married for 57 years.
Earline was a devoted and loving wife and stay-at-home Mom for her three children, Michael, Dennis and Judy, and a loving grandmother of six grandchildren and great-grandmother of five great-grandchildren. Her family was the joy of her life and she was so proud of their achievements. She loved her family, her home and Monrovia, calling it "God's country". Earline always had a generous spirit and wonderful sense of humor.
A quiet, behind the scenes supporter of many projects, Earline never wanted to be in the limelight.
Earline attended Sierra Madre Congregational Church. She was an active volunteer with the Children's Hospital Guild and also volunteered at Arcadia Hospital, telephoning shut-ins and visiting those who could not be reached on the phone. One year, much to her surprise, Earline was the Grand Marshall in the Monrovia Christmas Parade, only being told of this honor, once she was in the car, and realizing that it wasn't about Dick.
Earline loved entertaining and cooking for large groups and parties, especially for her family and friends, and her husband's and son's political fundraisers. Her pies and cookies were delicious and freely shared with friends and family. She once baked a 6 foot cake in the shape of California for a celebration of the reapportionment initiative. Her baked beans were loved by everyone. She looked forward to an annual beach party with friends and Halloween and Christmas parties held in her home. She loved creating unique Halloween costumes for herself, Dick and her children. She was quite a seamstress. Earline had a special talent in decorating her home for holidays, creating special memories for friends and family. She also loved gardening.
Earline's laugh was infectious and she loved playing practical jokes.
Earline will be missed by her husband, retired Senator Dick Mountjoy, son Michael and daughter-in-law Suzie Mountjoy, son Dennis Mountjoy, daughter Judy and son-in-law Gary Schaeffler, grandchildren Tammy and Trevor Whitmore, Michael and Nicholas Mountjoy, Heidi and Richard Stevens, Tyler and Kyle Schaeffler and great-grandchildren Diego, Sarah, Richard, Summer, and Lelia sister Evelyn Thompson and her many friends.
Services:
The service for Earline is scheduled for Thursday, November 5th at 10:00 a.m. at Sierra Madre Congregational Church, 170 W Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre. Graveside at Live Oak Memorial Park, 200 E Duarte, Monrovia, Reception to follow at the Aztec Hotel, 311 W Foothill Blvd., in Monrovia.
