Is Meg Whitman a "Big Lib" Supporter?

Meg Whitman has had some bad days lately. After recently proclaiming herself a "darned good" conservative Republican, Senator Barbara Boxer's staff revealed that Whitman was a Boxer supporter in 2003. Dangerously for Whitman, Senator Boxer is one of the most liberal members of the Senate.

According to Boxer aide Rose Kapolczynski, Whitman supported Boxer's "Technology Leaders for Boxer" effort in April of 2003. A letter from Boxer's office from 2003 features a quote from Whitman stating that she felt Boxer was a "courageous leader and friend of California's technology industry." (see image below)

This is just one more troublesome issue on top of her voting record -- or lack thereof.

Her past voter registration and voting history has been a major faux pa for her candidacy. At one point Whitman said she never registered to vote in California until 2002 and didn't declare as a Republican until 2007, then put out a statement that she "misspoke."

Since then Whitman has continued to portray herself as a long-time Republican.

A closer look at why Whitman endorsed Boxer proves that her support was sensible, of course. Boxer was the incumbent Senator that was a good legislative friend of the technology sector and Whitman was CEO of ebay, one of the biggest tech companies in California. As Whitman spokesman Sarah Pompei pointed out, Boxer was also an opponent of the Internet tax. And with Whitman's ebay empire poised to be hit hard by such a tax, one can see why Boxer would be appealing to a CEO of a technology company such as ebay in that case.

But as a member of the business community Whitman's former, and logical, support of Boxer in 2003 -- good sense in a business context -- is a major political albatross. It's a whole sleeping with the enemy meme that will certainly dog her campaign.

After all, elections are built on a fair amount of emotion and this latest revelation will add to the suspicion with which party loyalists will view Whitman's candidacy. First was the lack of voting and now her support of one of the right's worst enemies, Boxer? This is an emotional wrecking ball for her campaign.

The only real solution for this past record would have been for Whitman to come out at the outset and say she was somewhat non-committal on politics before 2007 but then saw the light of conservatism. Instead she tried to act as if she was always Reagan redux. clearly this is not the case despite her protests to the opposite.

Granted, Poizner has done the same thing with his I-have-always-been-Republican claim even though he had an early history of donating to Democrats and supporting big tax hikes.

Again, I understand why Whitman did what she did in the past. Business is business. But this is politics.

I hardly see this as an

I hardly see this as an endorsement of Boxer's policies. Whitman was the CEO of e-bay and this was a tech specific nod to Boxer. To try and infer that she favors Boxer's liberal policies is a bit of a stretch. The truth is, Meg Whitman is a savvy business woman who was hugely succesful in the private sector. California needs some real world experience to get us out of the monumental mess we are in. In short, she has my vote.

Truth is Whitman Lied

And got caught in it - if she was ready for Prime-time, she'd have been out in front, not hiding behind staff equivocating. Savvy businesswoman? Stock Spinning, Stock Dumping, Ebay's stock price 1/5 what it was when she was CEO... if that's savvy, vote for Jerry Brown!

Doesn't Matter

No Republican will win the Governor's Mansion in 2010.

Too much Arnie, too little progress under Republican leadership.

Might as well focus on the Senate.  Fiorina is the hand to back, I say.

This is exactly why no

This is exactly why no successful business person will ever be elected.  From a political stand point it was stupid to help Boxer... from a business point of view it was smart.  Politicians call this a donation, business people call this extortion, in other words the politician comes to you and tells you they need a donation or you get screwed.... higher taxes and regulations or a campaign donation.  This is more common than anyone knows... I can tell you first hand.  Politicians are scoundrels and leeches on productive America.

Pay no attention to what she sez. Look at what she has done.

Meg has no experience in state government. Should could hire a bunch of Harvard Alumni (Czars) to help her out. Meg gets bored fast. Her tract record clearly establishes this fact. She was at ebay awhile because it was a great challenge and she made a ton of cash. She was not a founder of Ebay, She was along for the ride. She got lucky. She held many jobs before ebay. All short term. She is not an inventor. She is a diplomat. Not a bad one. But she did make some serious mistakes. Like buying Skype and buying a Chinese ebay competitor. Both lost big $$ for ebay. Skype is on the block. And the offers are skinny. She may have lost her job over this. No one will admit the truth. Check it out. Also, She forgot to vote for most of her life.  No excuse counts on this one. If she was so busy her admin could have filled a absentee ballot out for her and sent it in. She supported Boxer in 03 because boxer give's back to big supporters. And ebay needed a friend in DC. Thats the politics in Calif. No new news.  Meg ads nothing to the mix. If she is the R candidate. Jerry and his latino following will eat her for lunch at the polls. The only chance the Red team has is Poizner.  He has proven government experience and good track record of getting good stuff done in Calif State Govenment.
