Ken Maddox Is A Big Labor Republican

Posted by: Kevin Korenthal | 05/05/2008 10:37 AM

It should come as no surprise that this blogger is against Ken Maddox for Capistrano Unified School District Board. I've already pointed out that Maddox is not only a shill for Big Labor but has actually stumped for the anti-free market tool called the union-only Project Labor Agreement.

It was on this very blog that it was revealed that the Director of Legislative Affairs to Board of Equalization Member Michelle Steel has aspirations for this local office. My deep respect for Michelle Steel aside, Ken Maddox's ties to Big Labor make him a dubious choice for the position he currently holds. Steel has been a stalwart taxpayer advocate while Maddox's repeated pandering to the unions is an indicator that he does not share the free market philosophy of his employer.

Bygones.

But I'll be damned if I am going to stand by (on the other side of the Orange County line) and let the voters in this particular school district be hoodwinked into voting for someone that they think will act responsibly with the district's funds. There is no place in Public Works construction that has become  more the playground for labor unions than local school districts. Can you say LAUSD?  Maddox's advocacy of the union-only Project Labor Agreement means he is of the belief that 20% of the construction industry should be allowed to monopolize 100% of the construction in the district.

There are only a small handful of elected Republicans that have their hand out to Big Labor and the ranks of these Benedict Arnold Republicans is shrinking. But unless we remain vigilant in rejecting labor-loving Republicans, what little remains of the narrative of Republicans as fiscally responsible stewards and free market advocates will disappear altogether.

Please see my previous RedCounty post on Ken Maddox'a ties to Big Labor.

Kevin, when you urge us to reject Maddox, are you suggesting we should support the Democrat running against him?

I am suggesting that in a race where the Republican supports union-only Project Labor Agreements, one should look closely at his/her opponent. The best case scenario, however, would be for a Republican with strong free market beliefs to enter the race.

Choices? said:

The time for entering the race is over. The choices are limited to a democrat, an independent and a republican. The only candidate who has participated in the efforts to reform CUSD (for years) and understands the issues facing this corrupt district, is the republican, Ken Maddox. I guess we could just vote against the recall and keep that paragon of republican values, Sheila Benecke, in place. On second thought, I'll vote for Maddox.

I read Maddox's bio on the cusdrecall website. He is a military veteran with an interesting background. He has my vote.

If you're not opposed to giving 100% of the jobs to 20% of the workforce thus raising the cost of construction by up to 30%, go right ahead and vote for Maddox.

All others must abstain or vote against the recall in order that they should be able to look themselves in the mirror each morning.

Korenthal says, "...All others must abstain or vote against the recall in order that they should be able to look themselves in the mirror each morning." Given the years of gross fiscal mismanagment and well-documented corruption at CUSD under the "leadership" of Trustees Draper and Benecke (who are the recall targets), Korenthal's statement is one of the most idiotic I've ever read.

That's it, we'll solve the problem of incompetence by replacing him with someone who is bought and paid for my the biggest, most powerful special interest group in the world.

Who's the idiot?

After talking to Maddox several times about the issues at CUSD, including those involving contractors, I seriously doubt he will wreak such havoc on the district. Maddox has had extensive discussions with reform leaders about the history of abusive contractor practices at CUSD, and he is well-aware of the nature of the abuse and needed corrections. He has discussed solutions that are fiscally conservative and consistent with the reform agenda, which is beholden to no special interest. He has discussed in detail the solutions to stop most of of the abuse, reverse much of the damage caused by it, and help the district regain the credibility lost at the hands of recall targets Benecke, Draper, and their old guard colleagues and staff.

There are many issues facing CUSD, and Maddox is qualified and committed to tackle them in furtherance of the reform agenda, plus he brings much-needed leadership skills to assist the previously elected, minority, reform trustees. Even if, for the sake of argument, the negative speculations about Maddox were true, 30 percent would be cheap compared to the waste caused by recall targets Benecke and Draper, who are proven law-breakers and liars, who have, and continue to waste millions at virtually every board meeting. The recall targets are so incompetent and unethical, that for those who understand the district's many issues, Maddox would be a welcome and positive change.

Maddox could probably put this whole issue to bed by making a Press Release in which he pledges not to support Project Labor Agreements or other union-only agreements. If Maddox can convince the naysayers that he stands for open competition, he can undo some of the damage that his relationship with Big Labor has wrought upon him in conservative circles.

Fair enough.

Does Maddox have the Log Cabin Republicans' endorsement? That's what really matters.
