Kevin James Uneven Performance

Radio talk show host Kevin James spoke to 80 members and guests of the Foothills Lincoln Club Friday at Annandale Golf Club in Pasadena. Much of it was very good. The former assistant Federal prosecutor talked of the need for conservatives to go on the offensive against Barack Obama and not be cowed by either his popularity or his race. Couldn't agree more. He spoke of the need for us not to let the left frame the issues so we are operating on their turf using their language. Right on.

But James then went off the deep end with a long harangue on how all conservatives should support gay marriage because it is a "civil rights" issue. Talk about falling into the left's trap on framing the issue!

Over seventy percent of black Californians supported Proposition 8 last November in part because they know that a symbolic stamp of approval for the homosexual lifestyle is nowhere near the same as the civil rights struggle of the 60s and 70s. Just because the usual suspects frame it in those terms doesn't mean people have to agree with them and use those terms themselves.

What about the religious convictions of most black Californians and others regarding keeping marriage as it has been for the past several thousand years? James dismisses it in a three word preface to his argument. "Religious opinions aside...". No Kevin, you can't brush the moral foundation of society under the rug so cavalierly. Our faith in God is a powerful force for good and essential to a kind and up-lifting society.

James talked for almost half an hour on this subject without even mentioning the strongest reason for marriage. Children are unquestionably best served through being raised by a mother and a father. Future generations are the best reason not to allow the historic definition of marriage to be changed.

And yes, if it is legal gay marriage will be taught in public schools. Your kids and mine will come home from fourth grade and hear "Teacher said when I grow up I can marry a boy or a girl. It's all the same because it's my civil right."

Remember how confusing growing up was? Can you imagine how much harder it will be as a parent if we have to deal with this additional interference in our right to raise our own children?

Conservatives don't need to change our fundamental beliefs to appease the fads of today. We need to defend the framework of our country and our Constitution from those those who twist words and concepts from what they have always meant to what these folks would like them to mean.

Althoug, you are correct in

Althoug, you are correct in that his speach was good, at some points it was still a little wishy washy. He needs to tighten up his tie also.

Gay marriage

If you are talking about religious heritage, how about the fact that Martin Luther said every true Christian must at some point in his life stand on a controversial issue against his friends, neighbors and his church (Here I stand, I can do no other) so if anything, religious belief should tell a voter to look to his own conscience.   As for the idea of marriage being around for thousands of years, they may be a small minority, but there have been gays in recorded history since the beginning and also many historians acknowledging that those relations were just as monogomous as that of heterosexuals.  When you throw in the fact that several species of animals practice homosexual romance, I think there is a pretty good argument that conservatives who don't support gay marriage will find themselves on the wrong side of history as the people around them become more knowledgeable.
