With Friends Like These...You Better Buckle Up

By Keith Carlson | 05/17/07

I'm not sure how many GOP Presidential candidates want to get photographed with Sen. Kennedy--especially if their picture is at the top of Drudge announcing a Senate deal Kennedy is hailing and Sen. DeMint is calling "amnesty." But that's what is going on right now for Sen. McCain.  They are announcing a Senate "compromise" (you give a little, and then we'll take what we want, thank you) on the immigration bill. I know... read more »

Arnold on Rush

By Keith Carlson | 03/21/07

I've been trying to find an OC hook for this story, but can't (maybe:  lots of Rush listeners in OC, maybe the policy items debated will affect OC?)  In any event, our Governor was on the Rush Limbaugh show today.  There have been stories flying around that Arnold called Rush "irrelevant" yesterday on TV.  I assume, but don't know, that this was a clearing-the-air interview. I did not hear it, only read the... read more »

Roe v. Wade at the OC Register

By Keith Carlson | 03/06/07

The national debate over abortion came to OC last Friday.  Jubal might have missed it in the "News Roundup".  In any event, James Taranto of the Wall Street Journal caught the debate, and reported on it in his always insightful, and usually hilarious, "Best of the Web Today". As background, the language used in this debate has long been key to proponents on both sides.  In essence, the battle over the words... read more »

McServative

By Keith Carlson | 02/15/07

I just read a John McCain fund raising letter.  Two things stood out.  One, the number of prominent San Diego backers he has on his National and State Finance Committees--Steve Francis, Sam Hardage, George Plescia, John Davies, etc.--and that there seem to be far fewer of the "usual suspects" of prominent donors from OC.  He does, however, list George Argyros and Donald Bren as National Co-Chairs.  I remember SD was... read more »

King Ron I

By Keith Carlson | 02/15/07

The Sac Bee has an interesting article on Ron Nehring becoming Chairman of the California Republican Party.  It paints an optimistic picture for the state party.  And it is not simply a matter of honeymoon-period puff piecery.  It is based on Ron's past performance. Ron is also Chairman of the San Diego GOP.  He came in with rampant internecine battles and a debt--sound familiar?  5 1/2 years into his San Diego... read more »

Churchill and Sherman on Susan Schroeder

By Keith Carlson | 02/14/07

"There are a terrible lot of [rumors] going about the world, and the worst of it is that half of them are true."  ~Winston Churchill I guess the one OC Spock wrote about Susan Schroeder, however, was false--a true rumor, but not a truth.  Based on "Total Buzz" , the rumor going around at the CRP convention can stop now.  Some had heard that "Fashionista" Susan was planning a run for D.A.  Susan... read more »

OC-South

By Keith Carlson | 02/06/07

Jubal is always posting the latest mailers for various campaigns.  So I'm joining in, electronically.  I just received an interesting campaign email.  It was the formal "I'm running" email for an Assembly race.  Sure, it's not quite in the OC--it's for A.D. 75, in SD County--but a) it's interesting and b) it's close. Nathan Fletcher--Marine, political activist, friend, business owner, defender of freedom, etc.--is... read more »

Jaramillo Plea

By Keith Carlson | 01/29/07

Total Buzz reports that George Jaramillo just pled no contest to public corruption and perjury.  Not much of any analysis on how/why, etc.  There is the comment that he agreed to spend 1 year in jail. There is an interesting line in the OCR's piece saying:But this afternoon he agreed to plead no contest, six weeks after his defense attorney lost a motion to remove the Orange County District Attorney's Office from his case. The 1 year... read more »

CRP Update

By Keith Carlson | 01/04/07

Yeah, yeah...1st Supervisor race.  Sure, that's exciting, but the most pressing elections are the upcoming California Republican Party elections, in Sacramento February 9-11.  It is the party's organizational convention, when most of the new officers are elected.  So, here's your update.  Right now there are 4 OC'ers on the Board.  Me, Rep. Ed Royce, Sen. Dick Ackerman, and Gen. William Lyon.  I was elected... read more »
