Positions on 1A
By Keith Carlson | 03/24/09
The CRP Board of Directors passed a resolution Friday urging the Party's Executive Committee to come out against Prop. 1A. In this instance, the ExCom is the body that establishes the party's official position--the Board cannot. Adding to the anti-1A momentum, Steve Poizner was on John and Ken yesterday ripping the tax-increasing measure. The latest development is that there are now a majority of the members in both Republican... read more »

What If History
By Keith Carlson | 03/06/09
While not OC specific, these D.C. moves affect us too. What if Boehner would have done this 2 years ago? Would we be here? While I'm happy we're calling for a spending freeze now, I'm not sure a national-financial mess was necessary to prompt us. The argument to the American people should not be that 'when in a crisis, the federal government should not grow.' Instead, we have to explain why Americans' individual freedom... read more »

California Suicide?
By Keith Carlson | 03/05/09
I found Victor Davis Hanson's article today in NRO quite interesting. It is depressing to have all of California's resources described in such detail, followed by our woeful situation. Rich in resources, Hanson argues--persuasively--that our state is destroying itself with "California Dreamin'". This vacation from reality is not serving us, our our children, well. You should read his piece here. read more »

OC Likely Impacted By Cockamamie "Open Primary"
By Keith Carlson | 03/04/09
The so-called "Open" Primary is, if you think about, really just the opposite--it's a "Closed General". In effect, it closes participation in elections to minority parties in partisan areas. In S.F. and L.A., the effect of the "Open" primary will be to have only Democrats end up on the November ballot. Here in O.C., the effect will be to give the voters a 'choice' between two Republicans. While this is a cynical ploy by some in... read more »

Pop Quiz
By Keith Carlson | 03/02/09
Time to take the quiz, courtesy of Bill Leonard. Click here (I missed two, one of which I think was a trick question, one was just dumb on my part.) What's the average for Red County readers? read more »

A Bad Deal...Update
By Keith Carlson | 02/12/09
I just spoke to Senator Harman and Assm. Silva. Both are strongly opposed to the so-called budget deal. In fact, it's no 'deal' at all. Taxes in exchange for...? Nothing that I can see. They both also urged people to call their (and others') Senators and Assemblymen. I've been told that it is particularly important to call the caucus leaders, as they are the ones negotiating for all Republicans. They also said... read more »

A Bad Deal
By Keith Carlson | 02/12/09
While the specifics of the state budget deal are not completely out, what we do know is bad. Simply but, Republicans are poised to vote on a tax increase. This is a bad idea in the most taxed state in the country, a terrible idea in the midst of a recession. It is terrible policy--a tax increase will hurt us not help us economically--and terrible politics--it will harm the GOP's age-old position against tax increases to support... read more »

Tom Fuentes--60 Years and a Community College District
By Keith Carlson | 10/17/08
Chairman Emeritus of the OCGOP, Tom Fuentes, celebrated his 60th Birthday last night at the Balboa Bay Club. The event also served as a rallying point for his re-election bid to the South Orange County Community College Board of Trustees. By the turnout, I'm assuming his competition is in deep trouble. Let's say it was a bit larger than your average community college board candidate event. In fact, it was a huge... read more »

Win At All Costs
By Keith Carlson | 10/14/08
Orange County--America's Most Republican County--has recently had its most famous (rodent) citizen register to vote: as a Democrat. What is shocking, is that Walt Disney was known as a fairly conservative, anti-union sort of guy. Now, ACORN has registered his famous mouse. It was done not in Orange County, CA, but Orange County, Florida--making it look like Mickey is trying to avoid California taxes by living in... read more »
