Just Like Chief Bratton
By JL "Buzz" Aguirre | 10/27/09 | 08:16 PM EDT | 7 Comments
Reportedly, the public will know the name of the person destined to fill the over-sized shoes of outgoing LAPD Chief William Bratton any minute now. A five-member panel has been going over the qualifications of 13 applicants interviewed last week and will winnow it down to three finalists. The names of the finalists will then be forwarded to the Mayor for the final cut.
In previous interviews Police Commission President John Mack has been quoted as saying that the preferred candidate is someone similar to Chief Bratton, but different.
Arguably Chief Bratton is an accomplished leader and well-versed in managing what we call the Voter Burger – an illustration of the usually opposing forces between the voters, organized labor, elected politicians and management.
>To get additional resolution, we requested a copy of the criteria being used by the five-member panel, but as of this writing, we have yet to receive a response.
Now, the reason for the request is not just academic: Consider that the Orange County Board of Supervisors resorted to Bob Murray and Associates to develop a comprehensive weighted matrix that was used to come up with the finalists for Orange County Sheriff’s position, which eventually went to Sheriff Sandra Hutchens. Once we reviewed the aforementioned criteria, we concluded that not only was it a waste of taxpayer’s money, but it also excluded otherwise extremely qualified leaders
The question remains, what should qualify a person to be named the new LA Chief of Police, other than “just like Chief Bratton

This should be interesting! It is also interesting that Bratton decided to hand in his notice when he saw that Mayor Villaragross-a won re-election. Gee whatta surprise!!! Read between the lines people.
Bratton was the best L.A. had and they are letting him go, no! They are pushing him out.

|Tank:
Interesting observation - My initation thoughts were that since the city is broke, perhaps there are greener pastures to mow.
What is clear is that Love Him or Hate Him, whoever replaces Chief Bratton has some huge shoes to fill.
Not having any idea as to what the real criteria is, we have to wait and see, but preliminary conclusion is that the Chief's replacement has nowhere to go, but down.- reply
|Bratton and Tony Villar were allies. That, along with the fact that Bratton is a liberal Democrat who loves to criticize the previous LAPD, hence the reason the Los Angeles Times loves him. The L A Weekly has done a lot of articles about the "decline" of crime in L.A. under Bratton and his close relationship with Villar and the unions.

|There is no question that Chief Bratton is a PR Guru - the major reason Rudy decided to part ways. Of course, we all know the Mayor has not met a photo op he did not like.
The reason unions love the Chief is because he was an ardent supporter - when the funds were there - there are no more funds now.
This is the major reason that led us to the conclusion that the Chief's replacement has no where to go, but down.- reply
|Cotobuzz - We are in agreement about Bratton. However, in regards to union backing, it was more about the SEIU unions, not the law enforcement unions.

|You are right - LE labor, seeing the writing on the wall has selected to straddle the fence. Not so with the new Chief.

|...and just like the Chief wanted, his replacement will be an LAPD insider - meaning that the Chief's tactics will not be exposed.
The finalists are:
Deputy Chief, Chief of Detectives Charles Beck, 32-year veteran of the LAPD
First Assistant Chief Jim McDonnell – currently second in command, 28-year LAPD veteran
Deputy Chief San Fernando Valley Bureau Michel Moore, a 27-year veteran of the LAPD
Apparently the panel decided not to rock the boat and deferred to the Chief, as he has consistently mentioned that he conveniently wanted an insider to fill his position. We still have not heard from the commission whether a weighted matrix was used as a criteria to winnow down the list from the original unlucky 13.
