AD72Watch: Norby Likely To Prevail In Particularly Negative Special Election

By Jon Fleischman | 11/17/09

(Cross-posted on FlashReport) After talking with a number of savvy politicos whose opinions I hold in high regard, I think it is safe to say that the expected outcome of today's Special Election in Orange County's 72nd Assembly District will be that Supervisor Chris Norby will win the Republican nomination, but fall well short of the outright majority of the total vote necessary to avoid a run-off election next month. The analysis is pretty... read more »

Tsunami Over Unsustainable Public Employee Pensions - Decision Makers Will Be Held Accountable

By Jon Fleischman | 10/11/09

As we go into the 2010 election cycle, there is no doubt that spiraling, unsustainable public employee pension costs will and should be an important factor. It matters what candidates for office are saying about this issue. Red County readers should closely read this editorial from today's Orange County Register.  Candidates for office should read it as well. Do you agree with the Register's editorial board that these lavish... read more »

Just When You Thought We'd Turned The Corner On Egregious Public Employee Benefits...

By Jon Fleischman | 09/06/09

There cannot be a Red County reader out there who hasn't been reading the stories about the insolvency of government-funded pension funds. And, of course, we've seen how there are over 5,000 state retirees making six-figure salaries in their retirement -- and multiply that number many times over to include local government pensioners.   Due to the extremely generous pension formulas that have been adopted by public agencies around the... read more »

Probolsky's Wrong On Term Limits

By Jon Fleischman | 07/06/09

Over and over again we see those who oppose term limits argue, as my good friend Adam Probolsky has done in the post just below this one, that term-limits have had the opposite effect of their intended consequences.  He states that term limits have been a, "serious disaster for our state government in Sacramento and they offer no positive change in local government." Actually, term limits have had a very important and... read more »

I am exceptionally pleased to share with Red County readers that Orange County's top two elected law enforcement leaders, District Attorney Tony Rackauckas and Sheriff Sandra Hutchens, have both come out publicly agains the entire slate of meaures before voters on May 19, Propositions 1A-1F. By Jon Fleischman | 04/14/09

From today's Wall Street Journal Political Diary E-mail, which goes to thousands of informed readers across the nation... Not So Golden SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- A key component of the budget deal that California's Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger struck with the Democrats earlier this year was a ballot initiative to limit state spending in the future. Time to Axe The Tony Rackauckas Three Dollar Tax

By Jon Fleischman | 02/09/09

District Attorney Tony Rackauckas is a good man -- not only do I think that he is an awesome District Attorney, but he is also a friend.  A good enough one that I know that he will respect that he and I do not see eye to eye on a matter of public policy, and can agree to disagree. The District Attorney, tomorrow, is seeking to have the county impose a $3 tax in a bunch of real estate transactions in the county, raising hundreds of thousands... read more »

OCEA Buries Its Head In The Sand

By Jon Fleischman | 12/24/08

You have to wonder about the strategic thinking of the Orange County Employees Association, and its President Nick Barardino. The country is plunging head-first into a recession.  Turn on CNBC for link five minutes and watch the Wall Street ticker to see how many publicly held companies are announcing 1st quarter layoffs for next year.In this kind of environment, it is nonsensical to think that with a shrinking of private sector employment,... read more »

Surf City To Buy Up Houses? Just say NO!

By Jon Fleischman | 12/15/08

Apparently the City Council in Huntington Beach is going to be considering tonight, and this is serious, whether to put the local government there in the business of buying up houses under foreclosure, fixing them up, and then making them available as affordable housing.  This has to be one of the worst ideas I have heard in a long time. Sometimes politicians in local government shouldn't ask whether they CAN do something, but whether... read more »
