Islam and Free Speech

By Jan McDaniel | 04/30/09 | 02:33 PM EDT | 6 Comments

The Islamic assault on free speech has become considerably more sophisticated since the death sentence on Salman Rushdie.  A court in Jordan is seeking jurisdiction and an Interpol arrest warrant to try the creators of the Danish cartoons.  Geert Wilders, the creator of the film Fitna and member of the Dutch Parliament, is being prosecuted by Dutch authorities on hate speech charges.

The British House of Lords invited Wilders to show his film and speak about it.  The Labour government refused his attempt to enter the country, the first such refusal of any elected politician from an E.U. state.  The refusal was based on the assumption that Mr. Wilders’ presence in the U.K. would cause a public disturbance.  His right to free speech was not considered important enough to overcome the threat of public disharmony.  Mr. Wilders is criticized for calling for the banning of the Koran.  The charge comes from a September, 2007  speech Wilders gave to the Dutch Parliament.  This is the relevant part of that speech.

Madam Speaker, the Koran is a book that incites to violence. I remind the House that the distribution of such texts is unlawful according to Article 132 of our Penal Code. In addition, the Koran incites to hatred and calls for murder and mayhem. The distribution of such texts is made punishable by Article 137(e). The Koran is therefore a highly dangerous book; a book which is completely against our legal order and our democratic institutions. In this light, it is an absolute necessity that the Koran be banned for the defence and reinforcement of our civilisation and our constitutional state. I shall propose a second-reading motion to that effect.

He is clearly calling for the Koran to be judged by the same statutes as all other incitements to violence.  His call is for consistency in the application of the law.  This is a perfect example of why hate speech legislation is a slippery slope and a bad solution for most problems.  Mr. Wilders evidently agrees.  In a speech on 2/27/09 at the Washington National Press Club he said this:

I propose the withdrawal of all hate speech legislation in Europe....In Europe, we should defend freedom of speech like Americans do....Millions think liberty is precious. That democracy is better than Shariah....there is no stronger power than the force of free men fighting for the great cause of liberty.

In his 4/27/09 speech in Florida, Mr. Wilders proposed nine steps Europeans should take to defend against Islamization.

  • Speak out against the ideology of cultural relativism.
  • Redefine Islam as a political rather than religious entity.
  • Encourage voluntary repatriation of Muslim immigrants.  Expel Muslim immigrant criminals.
  • Stop mass immigration from Muslim countries.
  • Adopt a European equivalent of America’s First Amendment rights.
  • Require a pledge of allegiance and assimilation from everyone.
  • Stop building new mosques.  Close mosques where incitement to violence occurs.
  • Close Islamic schools.
  • Get rid of present political leaders.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations responded with a press release beginning:

WASHINGTON, D.C., 4/26/09) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today called on GOP leaders to demand that Rep. Adam Hasner, the head of that state’s House Republicans, step down from his leadership post for co-hosting an event at which the speaker said Islam should not be recognized as a legitimate faith and Muslims should not have religious freedom.

It may be possible for CAIR to exert enough political pressure to get Rep. Hasner removed from his leadership position.  But Rep. Hasner is not the issue.  The issue is Mr. Wilders’ right to say the things he says.

Cair

If cair thinks they are going to legally force people not to question what is going on with Islam, they are sadly mistaken. If the anti-Semitic hate speakers can speak freely on university campuses then so can others. In America, everyone can practice their relifion freely, including Muslims. It is when it becomes a political ideology preaching hate that we draw the line. Trying to suppress Wilders may not be un-Dutch, but it is un-American.

cair

Don't underestimate cair. In an American electorate evenly split on the subject of Islam, they can sometimes influence the swing vote. I like your sentences starting "In America.." and if you don't mind I will use them in opening my next diary piece on Islamic law. Read some of your blog, added to my favorites.

CAIR - Smoke and Mirrors

Gary, I agree with your comments, but you need to learn more about CAIR.  They are a smoke and mirrors organization who support Hamas, the Palestine terrorist group.  CAIR attempts to frame itself as a defender of the religious rights of Muslims, especially when someone speaks out against Islam.  In actuality, they are just another schoolyard bully trying to intimidate people who know the truth.  Unfortunately, some human rights groups naively accept their propaganda as the gospel and help beat the CAIR drums. The truth is out there for those who choose to find it.  At this time however, a majority of Americans do not understand the long term threat Islam poses for this country and continue to hide their heads in the sand.

Muslim Children in State Schools

Salaam

Muslim children have been attending state schools for tha last 60 years. They have been suffering from Paki-bashing and bullying. Majority of them have been leaving schools with low grades. They have been leaving schools without learning their cultural and linguistic skiils. The result is that they do not know where they belong. They suffer from Identity crises. Now Muslim youths are victim of terrorism. Thousands of them are being searched in streets and hundreds of them are behind the bar without any trial.

Bilingual Muslim children need state funded Muslim schools with bilingual Muslim teachers as role models during their developmental periods. There is no place for a non-Muslim child or a teacher in a Muslim school.

There are hundreds of state and church schools where Muslim children are in majority. In my opinion, all such schools may be designated as Muslim community schools.

Bilingual Muslim children need to learn and be well versed in standard English to follow the National Curriculum and go for higher studies and research to serve humanity. At the same time, they need to learn and be well versed in Arabic, Urdu and other community languages to keep in touch with their cultural roots and enjoy the beauty of their literature and poetry.

A Muslim is a citizen of this tiny global village. He/she does not want to become notorioulsy monolingul Brit.

miracles separate Christianity from other religions

The 2 reasons why i follow Christianity are the prophecies regarding Jesus in the Old Testament(Torah) before Jesus’s birth, and the miracles (supernatural healings of diseases, men seeing visions, men still being able to prophesy, etc) in the Church even today. Muslims generally believe that although God did many miracles through Moses,Jesus, etc, He is not doing miracles today and that the miracles claimed by christians today are fake. I just wanted to ask that why would God who is fully capable of performing miracles, stop performing them in today’s age for no proper reason? i think that miracles dont happen to muslims not because God has stopped performing miracles today, but because God doesnt want to misguide them. If He starts performing miracles among muslims then they would reason that since islam is correct, thats why God is giving them signs through these miracles.. I continue to see miracles in the Church in which i go to pray..
