Hugh Hewitt On Fire: 1A, Arnold, Abel, and Arlen, Oh My...

OC blogger extraordinaire, Hugh Hewitt, is on fire in this recent post.  It is not just a review of the latest (collapsing) poll numbers for the Special Election (all losing except the virtually meaningless, "feel good", Prop 1F).  It is also a statement about the state of affairs in California, and the impact the May 19th election could have on the entire nation.  This is a stinging indictment from one of the most listened to and read commentators in America.  It particularly caught my eye given Hugh's typically balanced, well reasoned demeanor.  It is a well-reasoned piece for sure, but it is anything but pro-status quo for the tax and spenders.

Check out some of his poll analysis and closing shots:

Because the state leadership decided to deceptively label and describe every initiative, let me translate all the gibberish:  Sacramento refused to do any serious cutting but instead jammed through huge hikes in income and sales taxes while attempting to rip off every other special fund in the state.

Voters watched it closely and were disgusted by the "solution."  They are going to overwhelmingly reject those parts of it which had to be put to the voters.

No doubt the Sacramento crowd will come up with more tax hikes, but the tax revolt that is brewing will continue to build and voters will not forgive or forget this extraordinary failure of government when the pols come around next November.  The state is badly broken and run by a coalition of incompetents and a bored and directionless governor whose best days were his first few months in office when he moved aggressively to cut the taxes he is now trying to raise...

Forget Arlen Specter.  The most important political message of this season is going to come out of California in three weeks.

Republican politicians like Maldonado who want political futures in the GOP will have to find a way to repent of their almost criminally stupid support for tax hikes to cover massive spending, or they will have to bolt the party like Senator Specter did.  This isn't about "big tent/little tent" but about a core principle that rejects the level of taxation and spending being pushed by Democrats, a level embodied in the non-stimulus package that ruined Senator Specter's standing in the party (and with many independents).  Democrats dismissed the tea parties as marginal outbursts by marginal people.  The very blue state of California is about to send a message that will most likely be ignored or misunderstood by MSM, but the GOP at every level should focus on the vote and the voter anger behind it.

And while these poll numbers are encouraging, I'm hearing there remains A LOT of money ready to come to the defense of Prop 1A.  It is not a done deal yet.

Hopefully we're just three weeks away from saying "enough is enough", no more politician bailouts.  No new taxes.  Start cutting.

Hmmm

When Hugh Hewitt starts criticizing any Republican, you know that those said Republicans must really be bad.  Of course Hugh was still drinking Arnold's kool aid all the way up until a few months ago.  Most regular Republicans have known that Arnold has been a horrible governor for a long time on almost everything that matters to our party.  Here's a funny email exchange I had with Hugh after he came and spoke to the OC GOP Central Committee right after last November's shellacking that we took.

Me: Hugh,                                                                            Feb 17th 2009

I just read your column about the CA budget.  You rightly
blasted Arnold and Abel Maldanaldo, but you are shameless!  I asked
you point blank back in November what you thought about Arnold S. and
you looked me straight in the face and said "he is doing a great job
Allan".  I've relayed your assessment of Arnold to many Republican
activists locally.  They are generally stunned when I tell them this
because no rational Republican thinks he is doing a great job.  In
fact, almost all of them despise him now, but you have that
Republicans can do no wrong syndrome that I just don't get.  Glad to
see however that you finally think Arnold is a bad gov.  Welcome back
to reality.

Hugh to me...Hi Allan: When you saw me, Arnold hadn't collapsed on the budget.  Now he has, so now I criticise him. HH

My reply: So he's only been a bad gov for the last month?  LOL.  What about the last four years of him governing as a Dem?  Oh well, I'll take
agreeing with you whenever I can get it :)

What Next

Hopefully, the polls are correct and all the Propositions will be voted down.  The logical question most voters will be asking is "OK, what happens next."  Not sure what the elected Republicans are doing in Sacramento, but they should be hard at work on a detailed plan to keep California from bankruptcy.  By the time the votes are counted and before the Democrats can start their hand wringing and doom and gloom whines, the Republicans need to have a written plan prepared and ready to be presented on how to deal with the deficit.  Everything in State Government should be on the table and open to budget reductions and/or elimination.  If there was ever a time ripe to blow up those boxes that the Governor promised he would do and then didn't, this is it.   Will the cuts be painful for some people?  Yes they will, but had our elected officials been doing their jobs over the years, the cuts today might not be necessary.  Obviously, the Democrats will reject the package and then the onus is placed on them to find areas to cut.  This time, all Republicans need to stand 100% together behind the "no additional tax" pledge. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
