Poking a Bee Hive

By Hiram Johnson | 07/29/08

One spring day when I was in 4th grade we found a bee hive hanging from a tree in the school yard. It was about 4 times the size of a football. The girls ran a safe distance, while the boys sat around and thought what to do. There was strong support for  throwing rocks at it to see what happens, but as we were gathering some up a boy named Tony decided to walk up and poke the hive with a stick several times. The bees noticed,... read more »

The Second Coming?

By Hiram Johnson | 07/14/08

Dear Readers,   It's with heavy heart I write these words: I fear the tribulations of Revelations may be at hand. There is no other worldly explanation for the Flashreport column penned by Duane Dichiara. It must be a sign of the second coming it is so bizarre. You see, in this column Mr. Dichiara is actually critical of the Republican Party.   Store food, and make your peace with the Lord. A Nation of Shop Keepersby Duane... read more »

Democrat Assembly Leader Comes To San Diego

By Hiram Johnson | 07/08/08

On Monday afternoon the news said Democrat Assembly Leader Karen Bass flew into San Diego. Now I can't prove why she came here -- but I can guess: the 78th Assembly District where Republican Shirley Horton is termed out of office. Republican John McCann now faces Democrat College Boardmember Marty Block for the hotly contested, largely Democrat, seat.   I saw an interesting presentation on the history of some of our legislative seats the... read more »

Democrat Ads Target Bilbray

By Hiram Johnson | 06/30/08

Is this year going to be as bad as last year for the GOP? Yes. One sign is that the Democrats are again targeting north county Congressman Brian Bilbray. Maybe I don't know north county as well as I should, but I just don't see it as blue country. But the Democrats are starting ads again this year there around the 4th of July. Thoughts? read more »

A Night of Surprises

By Hiram Johnson | 06/12/08

As I was watching the election returns last week what struck me were the picks I and most of the people I talk to regularly had just plain wrong: (1) the 1rst council district race between Sherri, Phil, and Marshall. Most people thought the real question was whether Marshall would come in first or second, and that Phil was out of the running; (2) the 7th council district race between Boling and Emerald. Wow. Right up until the end I think most... read more »

Yard Sign Theft

By Hiram Johnson | 05/22/08

I have no physical verification of this but I understand that there are several clear videos of union members, with faces identified, caught pulling up yard signs in Allied Gardens. The videos were taken over the last two weeks and I hear there are at least a dozen of them. One face, I hear, will be amusing to everyone... let's see if the TV news plays it...     read more »

Liberals Shred Emerald Campaign

By Hiram Johnson | 05/06/08

This afternoon the following liberal blog was being emailed around critical of Marti Emerald's campaign (I also attached it below so you don't have to hit the link). Actually, it was the second story floating around, the other one being the Voice of San Diego article on Marti Emerald and her "flip flop" problems. Together the two are making very different points, and they made me think a bit.The liberal blog says that the problem with the... read more »

Maienschein Whacks Goldsmith

By Hiram Johnson | 05/03/08

There is a theory making the rounds that Councilman Brian Maienschein knows he can't get into the City Attorney race run-off, so he is bound and determined to help his fellow councilmember, Scott Peters. I didn't give the theory much thought until the last few hours, when I heard that Maienschein whacked Goldsmith in the mail (if anyone has the piece please send it over so it can be posted). I haven't got the details yet, so I'll leave it for... read more »

May Day March Blocks Traffic

By Hiram Johnson | 05/01/08

A "May Day" march is blocking traffic downtown. I wish I had a camera. The crowd of three hundred or so is largely students. There are dozens and dozens of Mexican flags, and more than one communist Soviet flag. No American flags. I saw posters calling for "Aztlan" to be carved out of American territory. This was as disgusting a scene as I have ever witnessed... read more »

Just a Beer

By Hiram Johnson | 04/27/08

The heat is oppresive, so Saturday afternoon I went and had a beer down the street with my labor buddy. He says the labor folks are largely "pissed" at Marti for blowing up her own race. He says her arrogance is such that very few of the labor workers - who were quite excited before they got to know her - are interested in slogging around precincts for her. He said they have even resorted to bringing in labor workers from out of town! He also... read more »
