Some Thoughts

By Hiram Johnson | 12/16/08

** I'm only a casual observer of the San Diego City Council but from what I can tell the anticipated labor alliance isn't exactly as big as many of us would have thought. From my angle I think there are really three groups: Republicans Sanders-Faulconer-DeMaio, Laborites Hueso-Emerald-Gloria  and Independents Frye-Lightner-Young. Lightner in particular sounds like she is living up to her campaign talk about not being a slave to labor.... read more »

Missed Chance

By Hiram Johnson | 11/14/08

Anyone who reads Red County regularly knows that I have been critical of the insiders who run the local GOP. I've always believed that the GOP should be more inclusive, with more voices and opinions rather than less. I think that the Republicans who feel left out of the decision making have squandered a major chance to change the GOP to one more like what they want. What do I mean?   The GOP at every level in our nation, state, and local... read more »

Well Said

By Hiram Johnson | 11/03/08

Top GOP-ers: It's Bush and Rove's faultBy: Craig Shirley and Tony Fabrizio October 31, 2008 02:32 PM ESTLast Monday, former Bush White House aide Peter Wehner made a startling statement in an op-ed in The Washington Post. He said that while "the GOP is in bad shape, conservatism is not." Nothing could be further from the truth. Conservatism has been badly damaged by Wehner's former bosses, President Bush and Karl Rove, and others who never... read more »

The Car Wreck in District 7 San Diego

By Hiram Johnson | 10/23/08

I'll admit that I can't help but rubberneck when I see an accident. Is it wrong? Yes. But do I do it? Yes. That's why I had to pop into what I think is the final forum between 7th District City Council candidates April Boling and Marti Emerald. As I suspected, it was a car wreck.   Boling was composed. Emerald was everything other bloggers have suggested she is: out-of-control. Angry. Irratic. She virtually came unglued when Boling had the... read more »

Polling!

By Hiram Johnson | 10/13/08

Word is someone was polling District 7 last night. You know how third hand information is, but it sounded like there was a fairly nasty question linking Democrat candidate Marti Emerald to some big trial lawyer thing with mortgages and the economic crisis. Over time I've realized that candidates test their own negatives and well as their opponants, so it's difficult to tell which campaign is actually doing the poll.   After all the to do on... read more »

Firefighters Are Going to Post Signs for Emerald

By Hiram Johnson | 10/09/08

I was out this evening with one of my friends from the firefighters association and he said that they were going to be posting signs for Emerald in the 7th District in the next few days.   His general opinion was that Emerald had blown the race, and that the new fire association president had demoralized a good number of people in the union by 'going to the mat' against Carl DeMaio up in the 7th and getting routed.   By the way, was... read more »

3rd District Once More

By Hiram Johnson | 10/02/08

I have no verification of what I'm about to write, but this is what I heard tonight, more than once. There were a few variations on this so I'm going to try to just sum it up.   Sounds like Democratic Congressman Bob Filner wants to run for Mayor of the City of San Diego (again). I guess his wife was working for 3rd District candidate Whitburn in the primary then, at some point, was not. But Filner is back, and pressuring labor to keep out... read more »
