Shocking!

By Hiram Johnson | 03/26/07

Shocking! The San Diego City Council's 'financial analyist' Andrea Tevlin has urged officials to at least consider new revenues. Know what 'new revenues' mean in normal American English? You guessed it: tax hikes on you and your family. Andrea says, actually, that we shouldn't ignore 'any opportunity' to to shore up revenue. Thanks, Andrea, for living up to citizens' expectations of what exactly is the problem with City Hall. Let's quote the... read more »

...on the Airport Authority

By Hiram Johnson | 03/16/07

I enjoy the fresh voice of the on-line newspaper The Voice of San Diego. Their articles and columns tend to catch trends and stories well before the Union-Tribune or the North County Times. And, best of all, they are unafraid to take on 'the establishment'... whether its Republican or Democrat. This all being written, I thought there was a bit of inaccuracy in todays article by Rob Davis "New Airport Czar Suggested for Authority... read more »

So Where Do They Go?

By Hiram Johnson | 03/13/07

Chatting with folks here downtown, one consistent question is: where do they go? The "they" of course are Republican Council members Maienschein and Madaffer and Democrat Council members Peters and Atkins. One thought, and a fairly common one, is that as part of  "The Great Labor Union-Murphy Fiscal Disaster" they'll pack up and go home. But that would make this blog too short... so let's toss out some... read more »

Dazed and Confused

By Hiram Johnson | 02/27/07

So the San Diego City Council voted to raise our water rates Tuesday. I find myself in an interesting position on this one, in that I support the Sanders reform agenda but oppose new taxes generally, and specifically new taxes on me. But the Mayor supports the hike, and the one reliable reform vote on the council, Kevin Faulconer, voted for it. I guess I fall into the Hedgecock catagory: I'm willing to listen to the reasons we need an... read more »

Sigafoose Mid-Term Resignation

By Hiram Johnson | 02/24/07

Republican Carlsbad Councilwoman Norine Sigafoose has resigned two years into her four year term citing health concerns. Sigafoose has tended to be a somewhat independent voice on a city council that is known for unity, and she will be missed. Long-time Mayor Claude 'Bud' Lewis has called for a special Tuesday meeting to discuss whether Sigafoose's open seat should be appointed by the remainder of the council, or elected. He is recommending... read more »

Nonpartisan Politics

By Hiram Johnson | 02/18/07

So the local republican party and their business allies are now active in nonpartisan elections. 'Active' would probably be an understatement. The question of whether or not the local gop should be involved in local election was hotly argued since the 1980's. Under Nehring, and his probable successor mentioned in an earlier blog on this site, the matter appears settled. For years the older gop crowd argued, successfully, that if the party... read more »
