The Governor’s Own Party Says He Is Irrelevant

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick is now uncertain of his standing and is polling; a quick check of the numbers indicate that they are not looking so good. Democratic State Senate President Theresa Murray recently referred to him, the Governor from her own party, as "irrelevant". Recent Rasmussen poll confirms only 34% approve of the job Patrick is doing while 65% disapprove. Only 33% of his base claim they would vote for him again. This climate is so ripe for a GOP candidate.

Things must be quite bad within the depths of the Massachusetts Democratic majority when Theresa Murray is calling her own CEO irrelevant. She asserts that he is not even in the ball game while she and her State Senate colleagues voted to increase the Massachusetts sales tax from 5% to 6.25%.

This has drawn a reciprocal response however; the Governor claims that the Senate President should not be touting increases before reforms are made pen-ready for his desk.

This raises a much larger question: just who is relevant to the Democratic Party? Who, or what constitutes their leadership? Do they have any? Who is their compass, their guide? If Massachusetts Democrats feel their own leadership is hazardous, then one can only guess at the inner turmoil being felt all around the State House.

This is the perfect storm, for the GOP.

This is setting up an incumbent Governor as being incapable of leadership within his own party, and certainly not beloved by the masses of un-enrolled voters. These voters now look forward to 1.06.11, the last day of the current administration, as well as contributing to the precarious status of present Democratic legislators.

Here’s the truth in terms of our state spending, or pork, whichever way you choose to view it, which is responsible for our tax dollars vanishing down the state sink-hole:

•You, Deval Patrick, expanded a Washington DC office employing 10 staffers all on the MA state payroll;

•You purchased a Cadillac with state funds;

•You have not made a single thoughtful reform to state pensions;

•Your handouts continue to the DOC dropping $77K on flat screen TV's for inmates;

•You hired a $72K per year personal assistant for your wife;

•You spent $27K on redecorating your office, $12K was spend on the curtains (we all know how expensive that light blocking Robert Allen fabric can be…);

•You surpassed the previous administration’s use of the state helicopter, using it more in your first quarter than Romney did in his entire administration;

•You simply had to host 5 inaugural balls instead of one;

Lastly, Governor, you touted reform as a major pillar of your administration but did a quick step dance, just this week, utilizing a loophole, which allowed you to exceed the legal limit on campaign contributions. “The Seventy First Fund”, your own political action committee, because you are the seventy-first governor, hosted a fundraiser at the Union Club in Boston this week. This particular function allowed folks to exceed a $500 giving limit to the tune of $5,500.

Governor, you need to check your own pulse on spending in these stimulus-frenzied times.

Hypocrisy is alive and well within the halls of this Democratic Governor’s office and we should clearly understand that any meaningful ethics reform is only to occur at the hands of the Republican Caucus.

Folks, are you angry yet? We still have a few 1.06.11 stickers left.
