Gov. Sanford Should Resign Right Now

It would be hard for the Governor to have a bigger fan than me this side of Greenville. Though he has been adored in South Carolina where he has admirably served for years and years, he is not well known outside of South Carolina (until now), and I have done my best to change that.  I ate dinner with the Governor at the Club for Growth conference in Palm Beach last March, and was taken aback by his intelligence and economic with.  As the Programs Coordinator for the Lincoln Club, we brought him all the way to Southern California to be our annual dinner speaker just eight weeks ago.  He has been one of those rare politicians who does not seek out a way to compromise when it comes to fiscal duty and responsibility, but rather has done his job to protect the financial integrity of his state. He has done this with a belligerent state legislature, and hostile political environment.  I publicly pleaded with John McCain to consider him as a VP running mate last year.  I have been a Sanford guy.

And now, I am passionately pleading with the Governor: PLEASE RESIGN.  I do not care if this is his "personal life", and if many "Democrats do it too".  The left is going to be right to accuse the GOP of hypocrisy here, because unlike the Dems, we have run as a family values party, and South Carolina is a known "family values" state.  This is a political bombshell that we do not need right now.  Sanford may not have cared much about his marital commitments in the last year, but he ought to still care about his duty to the citizens of South Carolina, and frankly the nation at large.  This leaves the newspaper headlines when he leaves the Governor's mansion.  He is not worthy of public trust, and he needs to go.  I expect he will.  It is the honorable thing to do.  I guess in the next 72 hours we will see if he has any honor left.

Governor Mark Sanford

I don't know much about Governor Sanford, so the author has a big advantage on me there.  I sense however, that he is a good man who has performed well in his role as Governor.  The article was well done, but I disagree with the idea of Sanford resigning.  While not condoning extra marital relationships, I recognize that people are human beings and as such, we have shortcomings and all to often give in to them.  Standing up in public, admitting his guilt,  accepting responsibility and apologizing to the people he represents, tells me a lot about Mark Sanford.  Without rationalizing, who cares how the Democrats play this event.  With their track record of disgraces over the years, who is going to be the one to point the finger; Ted Kennedy, Barney Frank, Bill Clinton and on and on?  I think not.  Mark Sanford is just a man, he puts his pants on one leg at a time and cannot leap tall buildings in a single bound.  There has only been one man on this planet who was perfect, and sadly we have not done a very good job of folowing his example.  In these days and times, good Republicans are at a premium.  Let's just wait and see how the voters feel about Sanford's sins, his apology and the job he is doing.  For this situation, perhaps the best quote might well  be, "Let he who hath not sinned, cast the first stone."
