Georgia Legislature Vetos Bill Honoring Obama

On the surface this was a simple little resolution simply acknowledging the election of Barack Obama as President and a honorary lifetime membership into the Georgia Black Caucus. Things were going fine until Rep Austin Scott (R-Tifton) objected. It is this portion of the bill that Rep Scott objects to.
“WHEREAS, throughout his political career, President Barack Obama has enjoyed an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, vision, and passion for public service, and no one could be more worthy of special honor and recognition by the members of this body and the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus than this extraordinary leader.”
He wants the language changed to reflect that it is the simply the Black Caucus that is expressing these sentiments and not the whole legislature.
Of course I can find a whole lot more in that paragraph to take objection to such as that part about unimpeachable reputation for integrity.
By a vote of 68-70 the measure was defeated, and there was no need for it to happen if the Democrats had simply changed the wording, but just like their brethern in Washington they seem incapable of compromise. They forgot there was one big difference. They are the minority party still in this state.
It will not take long for the race warlords to be all over this, but they had better hurry because Friday seems to be the last day to consider this resolution.
The entire resolution, SR 177, can be found here.
