The League of Women Voters and the Regional San Gabriel Valley Chamber of Commerce hosted the Diamond Bar City Council Candidates forum at the AQMD Government Center Building in Diamond Bar.

Unfortunately, the setting lacked proper microphone system and it was not available LIVE on Diamond Bar cable access Time Warner Channel 3 for residents and voters to watch the candidate forum from home.

All seven candidates showed up:  Incumbents Steve Tye and Ron Everett and 5 other challengers S. Dhand, Lucy Huang, Ling-Ling Chang, David Liu and Robert Velazquez.

There were 75 participants and residents who showed up to hear the question and answers on the following issues before the City of Diamond Bar:  Campaign Finance, Economic Development, Traffic Mitigation, Public Safety and definitely the hot button issue regarding the NFL Stadium.

The impression that one would get from this forum was that the candidates are split on a wide range of issues though there are 6 Republicans running, one Decline to State.

The candidates do not see eye-to-eye on campaign finance reform and campaign contribution limits.  Steve Tye and Ling-Ling Chang are opposed to contribution limits.  Lucy Huang, David Liu, S. Dhand and Robert Velazquez support limits.  Ron Everett is very cautious about the topic.

The NFL Stadium and the $20 Million settlement and communications to the residents about the city council dealings with Majestic were poor, therefore prompting the participants to put the incumbents on the defensive.  The residents have indicated that if the Council advocated on the behalf of the public, then the residents would likely not have questioned the council's intentions.

"The $20 Million settlement is not a lot of money," Mr. Liu stressed, "The communication to the residents was poor and the council was hasty on the settlement."

Mr. Tye says, "The council utilized all resources such as the "City Newsletter" and other forms of media to communicate to the residents."

Mr. Velazquez said, "We need citizens imput in the process for traffic mitigation and other issues relative to the NFL Stadium."

Now, the next seven days will be grueling campaign for all candidates to reach out for every vote, because tonight indicator anticipates a very close city election.

Whatever happens on November 3rd in Diamond Bar will definitely set the tone for the coming City Council elections in Walnut, which is slated for next April of 2010.

What a travesty to deprive

What a travesty to deprive the citizens of Diamond Bar of the opportunity to hear these candidates live on TV!  Ms. Gallegos (one of the organizers) blamed the lack of access to sound system and live-tv feed on the $500 charge she would have incurred from AQMD.  I'm sure all the candidates (at least the challengers) would have been willing to subsidize that cost at $80 each to ensure the quality of the night's presentation.  As it was, many of us in the audience could hardly hear the speakers. On top of that, Diamond Bar cable channel 3 chose to schedule a Bob Huff mocumentary instead of the candidate forum.  How can our city and its current council claim to have the best interest of the residents in mind when they will not even lift a finger to share this important election information with all of the residents?  Why bother having a cable channel and not use it to let voters see what is going on?  Maybe it's because if Diamond Bar residents were able to see this, they would learn the truth.  They would have seen  Ling-Ling wring her hands like Lady Macbeth everytime she had to defend her large contributions from outside the city.  They would have seen Steve Tye insist that contribution limits are of no use.  They would have seen that the challengers raised valid points and strongly prepared to lead our city to a better direction.

Diamond Bar Debate

I attended the debate last night and was dismayed at how Steve Tye can so arrogantly pretend to protect the citizens of Diamond Bar.  He states his number one concern is safety yet he welcomes an NFL football stadium which would host teams like the Raiders whose fans could rampage through our city, urinate on our lawns, attack our children, and destroy our property.  How can you be pro safety and welcome thousands of beer-drinking revelers hanging out at tailgate parties before and after the game and then swerving drunkenly through our streets on their way home or looking for more "fun?"

Diamond Bar Debate

Robert Velazquez was the only candidate that mentioned the need for better communication from the City Council to their constituents.  He was the only one who spoke up in favor of preserving open spaces, keeping the golf course, and beginning a working dialogue to establish one school district for all of Diamond Bar.   To these issues the other candidates threw in the towel.   Ling Ling went so far as to say that trying to get Diamond Bar in one school district was "not in our jurisdiction".   Wasn't it the uninformed voters that got it to that in the first place?  Velazquez did say it would take work to do it, but it is possible.  The others took a defeatist attitude, a status quo on all issues that need work and change.  This is especially true of the two incumbants. I wonder why?    S.Dhand spoke about having SAT prep classes for students from both the school districts.   What is that supposed to accomplish?   The point is that one school district equals one people of Diamond Bar.   Having a split school district divides us, and thus weakens us as a City.

That's false.  Lucy Huang

That's false.  Lucy Huang also stated a need for better communication to the residents.  She mentioned walking door to door!  You're obviously a supporter of Roberts, which is fine.  However, candidates did not take a defeatist attitude.  So please don't make the other candidates look like they are worthless.

Candidates Forum

I attended the forum and here's my recap of the candidates:

S. Dhand- Sure he's a doctor, but most of his suggestions to improve DB is to have health clinics, and maybe open a hospital in the city.  All of which is not relevant to the city right now, and obviously is not possible without major money.

Steve Tye- Seemed self-assured regarding decisions made while on City Council.  Experienced, cool under pressure.

Lucy Huang- Kept bringing up the fact that she's a "mother of three" (how that qualifies her to be on City Council is beyond me); would like to open more "wellness centers" to promote diet and health (again, relevance to make the city better?).  When asked how long they have been a resident in Diamond Bar, did not answer purposely because she has only been living in DB for 1 year.  The most unqualified candidate of the lot.

Ling-Ling Chang- A bit nervous, but did have the most information and research regarding how to improve Diamond Bar.  She came off as a very strong and independent woman.  Had great ideas on how to improve traffic and the economy, and to make Diamond Bar safer.  Seemed like a lot of the candidates 'copied' her answers, since they did not do the research beforehand.  Grew up in Diamond Bar, so has a vested interest in the city.  A very capable candidate.

Ron Everett- Very indifferent.  Follows the status quo and nothing else.  Does not seem to be very passionate about Diamond Bar.  Seems like he could care less if he won or lost, either way.

David Liu- Very hard to understand.  Not a lot of confidence in speaking.  His claim to fame is that he's a civil engineer and would've gotten more money for Diamond Bar in the Majestic deal.  Too little, too late.  A candidate that does not inspire much confidence.

Robert Velasquez- Articulate speaker.  Has good ideas for Diamond Bar, such as making the city a part of only one school district, albeit a very unrealistic goal.  Lots of his ideas sound good on paper, but are impossible to implement.  We would like to stop world hunger, but is that going to happen?  Very Obama like.  All talk, little action.

That's the summary in a nutshell.  Go out and vote!

 Actually it went down more

Actually it went down more like this:

Dr. Dhand MD BFD! He had alot to say about nothing. This guy's so busy with being a doctor how's he gonna have any time to be on the city council? Don't get me wrong. Nice guy and all, but still you have to question his ability to really focus on the city. Every Doc I've ever know practically lives at a hospital.

Steve (Ric Flair) Tye this guy's incredible. I don't know how he makes it past his bathroom mirror in the morning. This guy's so full of himself (I'm still recovering from the amount of feces I had to injest will listening to him talk) he opens with some cheesy one liner about his glasses and wanting to come off smart rather than good looking. What a MORON! What kind of prep talk does he get in the morning before he leaves his house? Typical sales guy. It's gotta stop sometime. I'm still wondering what this guy's done the last four years (other than take orders from Carol)?

Lucy Huang smokin' HOT! Then she speaks and you actually like what she's saying. She's honest, She's professional, she's very intelligent (surprisingly). While she doesn't really represent me much, she's definately got it locked down with the rest of the population. I'll be honest, I was actually impressed. She had realistic, attainable goals. She sounded like she could go toe to toe with anyone. And all she talked about was how she was going to help others. I didn't really hear her say anything about how she was going to benefit. I thought she slept on a question regarding the traffic congestion but hey if she could honestly provide a solution for traffic congestion she should be running for alot more than city council.  Whatever, I was impressed by her.

Ling LIng Chang. For someone who has lived here all her life (oh except for the ten years that I lived somewhere else) thats about her only attribute to this thing. Oh and the waterboard. what the hell does the water board do? I mean really, when she answered the question about the brown act I had to restrain myself cause she said "I even suggest to take different planes if we are going to travel together" really ling ling?  where were you guys traveling to? Did the conversation ever come up that we are in a drought and you sponsored a stadium that is going to drain precious resources from our area?  You hold a seat on the water board and worst yet you actually took money from Majestic Realty to sponsor your campaign. Oh and I'm to think that you are an ethical responsible POLITICIAN! give me a break. As someone who stated that her biggest goal in life is to see her fiance be the first foreign born president of the U.S. ? I say this much, quit telling everybody you graduated from our schools. Let's keep that a secret.

Ron Everett sorry i was sleeping the entire time he was talking.

David Liu so out of touch with the general public this guy really is a piece of work. He's like talking to a calculator, but he's english, but he's chineese. Oh i'm confused.

Ah Mr. Velasquez. this guy never calmed down for me. He seemed really nervous and unsure of himself. He had some nice ideas, but I wasn't really getting a sense of "this guy's gonna get stuff done" from him. You know?

So here's my pick  Dhand, and Huang. Say what you want pick your third as far as i'm concerned you'll be buying the same old story from all the other candidates!
