NCLB Accountability Requirements Catching Up with Coachella Valley SD
By Dave Everett | 12/20/07
When "No Child Left Behind" (NCLB) was passed, Teddy Kennedy must have thought that he pulled a fast one on President Bush. Looking for a "compassionate" issue to work on after the close fought election battle, it seemed Bush was conceding billions in new government spending for a cheap political win. Well now it seems like our President may have the last laugh. At the beginning of NCLB the standards were set so low that virtually every... read more »

Asm. Jeffries Proposing Bill To Add Capacity Along I-15
By Dave Everett | 12/19/07
Here is a little more news from the newest Jeffries Journal sent out yesterday. I hate traffic and support doing anything to alleviate it. So I'm encouraged by this suggestion of a bill to expand the 15 freeway by Assemblyman Kevin Jeffries. I'm looking forward to more details after the New Year. Jeffries' 2008 Legislative Preview When the State Legislature reconvenes on January 7, 2008, I will introduce a number of bills and... read more »

Banning Considering New Taxes
By Dave Everett | 12/19/07
It is always disappointing to see city councils with Republican majorities considering taxes. Yet here we have the City of Banning considering not one...not two... but three new taxes. It is a sad day when you can't even get the local Chamber of Commerce President to oppose higher taxes. Even spending $97,500 to research and poll residents on a new tax is a waste of tax dollars. Thanks to the Flashreport for catching... read more »

Assemblyman Jeffries' Thoughts On The Budget and Assembly Healthcare Bill
By Dave Everett | 12/18/07
Here is Assemblyman Jeffries take on the budget mess and the socialist healthcare bill/tax increase the Democrats rammed through the Assembly in the last few days. Kevin's assesment of the budget is right on the money, as usual, and I love his take on the politically correct, "Happy Holiday" cards. The Jeffries Journal- Tue, 18 Dec 2007 What's in the Capitol Eggnog? At the time of this writing I was sitting at Ontario... read more »

Riverside City Council Going Green?
By Dave Everett | 12/17/07
I'm a little suspicious of this item (Item 20) on today's Riverside City Council agenda: "Clean and green: A plan outlining initiatives to make the city more environmentally friendly is up for approval. The goal of the plan is to improve air quality, reduce traffic, increase use of parks and preserve the environment." Excluding the effort to reduce traffic, these sound like every "good intention" that the Democrats use to pave the road to... read more »

The PE Hits the Democrats for Overspending and Pork
By Dave Everett | 12/17/07
Rarely does our local newspaper do its job and actually call the Democrats and the Assembly Speaker out on their overspending and acceptance of pork in Sacramento. Here are two recent cases that I must give the Press-Enterprise credit for. They do have to try and be even handed and hit the GOP by saying, "Republicans block any tax increases." Well thank goodness somebody is. Undue perks?California... read more »

As Close As The GOP Gets To A Celebrity Wedding
By Dave Everett | 12/17/07
Republican members of Congress tying the knot - what could be more romantic? Riverside County Rep. Mary Bono, widow of Sonny Bono, married the great-grandson of a Hall of Fame baseball manager, Florida Congressman Connie Mack. I guess they will go home to their districts during the weekends and see each other during the week. Imagine only seeing your wife at work and on weekdays. Sounds like a bad sitcom. GOP House Members Mary... read more »

BCVWD Ratepayers Paying For Staff Son's College
By Dave Everett | 12/16/07
Maybe I am missing something here, but why doesn't the BCVWD just hire an engineer who has already completed his schooling and paid for it themselves. What if this guy flunks out? Why would taxpayers want to put this guy through school and not other engineers? Did other engineering students have a chance to apply? The whole thing smells of nepotism and using ones public office for personal gain (or your family's gain in this... read more »
