I have received numerous e-mails about embattled Democrat Congressman Charlie Rangel's bill to reinstate compulsory military service in America. I would like everyone to look past who Charlie Rangel is, a crook who used his office for personal gain, and consider reinstating the draft based upon its merits.
I was in the Army when we made the transition from an military force based upon drafting able bodied men and women to serve, to an all volunteer force. I was against this move. However, politics and a knee jerk reaction by those who were against the Vietnam War led to the elimination of the draft. This was the wrong decision forced upon our military.
A calling to the nation's defense is the first responsibility of all American citizens since Bunker Hill.
Today, the military service hand picks those who will serve using criteria that set a high bar for entrance. That is good. The down side is many of our youth now consider service to the nation as secondary to their personal aggrandizement. Today's youth take advantage of the freedoms and liberties protected by our military. The American youth have no sense of service above ones' self. They have no skin in the game, so they play war games on their Wii and X-Boxes, when a real war is raging overseas and in the homeland. While our soldiers are fighting and dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, most Americans are going to the mall. Sad but true.
Here are the three reasons why I believe we must reinstate the draft and compulsory military service for all Americans:
- America and the American dream are based upon sacrifice in service to the nation. Other countries understand that service above one's self interests creates a bond between the individual and the America whose bounty gives so much to so many from so few. Today less than one-percent of all Americans serve in our uniformed services. This one-percent is defending with their lives the other ninety-nine percent. That is not what being an American is all about. Service to protect and defend this nation is part and parcel of being an American citizen. Our military takes an oath to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies both foreign and domestic. Until you raise your right hand and so swear you will not understand what service really means. The military instills a sense of duty, honor and country in all who serve.
- The military creates an understanding of team work, loyalty to ones comrades, and leadership. Few other organizations can make the same claim. Unlike the private sector, pledging one's life to be part of an elite group of military men and women transcends the ordinary world of work. However, leadership skill sets learn in the military easily transfer to the private sector and enhance the overall quality of our workforce and work place. Core values like showing up to work on time, dressing properly and addressing your superiors in a respectful manner are instilled during military training. While the American military has rules it also encourages independent decision making in the face of danger. Soldiers learn how to think on their feet. Something sorely lacking today.
- Finally, the military provides training in a vast variety of careers. From driving a truck to flying billion dollar aircraft. From being a medic to commanding a hospital. Job expertise of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines makes a difference in the workforce. The technical job skills learned as a baker, butcher, or candlestick maker carry over to our businesses with the added bonus of free on-the-job training provided by our military. A win-win for our society.
As Dan Senor, author of Startup Nation, points out it is Israel's compulsory military service that in large part has lead to it being a startup nation. Everyone in Israel serves and has directly led to it being so successful and having so many entrepreneurs. As Dan points out it is the military experiences of Israeli youth that solidifies the idea that, " Israel is not just a country, but a comprehensive state of mind." That is what compulsory military service does, it creates a "comprehensive state of mind" that serves that nation well.
Time to reinstate compulsory military service in America and regain that which has been lost - our collective comprehensive state of mind.

Compulsory Military service.
With out question. youngsters both mail & female need to start paying there dues to this country that for the time being affords them more rights and benefits just by being born here( just ask the illegals and there kids) then any other country.
NOTHING IS FREE ANY LONGER, THAT INCLUDES LIFE LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.
YES!
It would be nice if the Draft was reinstated with few if any possible opt outs.
I have always felt a "professional" Military was a scary proposition, kind of like gun laws.
Bring Back The Draft, But...
I think the Draft should be brought back and make it mandatory that ALL able bodied men and women serve 2 years in either the Military or the Job Corps or the old Peace Corps now called the Volunteer Corps...
However, we need to better SCREEN those who get drafted! No more drug dealers, no more violent criminal offenders who dodged a felony charge just to a misdemeanor, just check out the Draftees better with our new high tech tools...
No Draft...
To give power to control a drafted standing army to the corrupt politicians, and presidents, you rail against makes little sense and is dangerous.
Currently, we are in two undeclared wars - unconstitutional. Article 1, Section 8 gives the power to declare war to Congress, not the president. All wars since WWII have been unconstitutional and disasters.
When congress, and presidents, start adhering to their oath of office I MAY subscribe to slavery (the draft) - not until.

Draft
I am for the draft. My reason for this that the our government give so much and gets so little in return like student loans, etc. As you can see that soldier in your picture that is kneeling, I bet that man has serve more then one tour. The draft will make sure that every one who lives in our country helps those that are volunteers for the military. Politicians I agree also need to clean their own back yard. The majority of t he volunteers are young man fresh out high school and college. .They will endure hardships that will have a long life impact like ptsd, tinnitus, all related to war. The draft will help those that have volunteer to serve their country and make sure that politicans sons also serve in the military and to have a regulation that college cannot be use as means of not serving. All current job at military installations are be filled by people who have not served. When a soldier comes home he cannot find a job because he went to serve his country and the ones that go to college get the job. There are many issues and one should be that if one is to volunteer for military, he should be given first crack at a job that he can be trained for just like the job he volunteer for. For every one volunteer there should be a draftee to replace his place. If this nation continues in the manner it has in going to war without congress approval sooner or later those volunteers are going to get out of the service. Who is going to volunteer then....the politicans.........the draft or sooner or later no army. This soldier are getting tired of fighting while everyone back home is watching football, going to the mall at his exense or should I say his llfe.
Not a draft
First off kids: such a system is NOT a draft and if the idea of such a system would be brought mainstream then you cannot attribute "draft" with anything you want passed or viewed positively. Draft has become a dastardly word in the United States of America. Interestingly the Israeli system was quoted here. What is funny about this is that they use the German and Austrian system. Of the various systems I have studied Austria is by far the most superior one. Every man spends 6 months in the military or 9 months in Red Cross or a nursing home, etc. This system then provides everyone in Austria with a free college education and excellent health care. That health care includes nursing homes ... get the picture here?
Lastly, although it wasn't directly stated I cannot believe how Israel's military is constantly put on a pedestal. I have heard so many people say "the Israeli military is the second best in the world", which couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, the Israeli military system is 13th at best. Their oil gets cut off and they are toast.
You know the worst of it though? Every single phone call made here in the United States of America is recorded and stored in an enormous facility in Israel. Why the F is that?
Sarasota Veterans' Commission needs an awakening as they are unquestionably a partisan organization and of course this is emphasized by the direct link to "Red County". Partisan politics have no place anywhere in the realm of veterans or our military. In 2010 in the House of Representatives the overwhelming majority of conservatives received and "F" rating on veterans issues while their counter parts scored significantly higher.
