The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation touched a nerve on the Left when it announced a withdrawal of funding of Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider.
The Left leapt into action and Komen wilted under intense pressure from Planned Parenthood’s progressive allies and quickly reversed itself.
The progressive message was that Komen hurt women by denying Planned Parenthood funds for breast cancer screening, and that the foundation injected abortion politics somewhere where it didn’t belong.
Planned Parenthood supporters even claimed that Planned Parenthood is a life-saving organization.
Uh, OK.
We’ve also heard that only 3% of Planned Parenthood’s business is abortion related, so why are we making a big deal over such a small part of the organization.
Well, it turns out Planned Parenthood is a little more involved in the abortion business than it would have you believe.
The “3%” talking point is arrived at by dividing the number of abortions Planned Parenthood performed by the total number of services it did. The problem with that number is that it treats handing out some condoms as the same as having an invasive surgical procedure.
So we can get a better idea of how important abortions are to Planned Parenthood by looking at finances. Even Media Matters admitted that Planned Parenthood receives 15% of its annual revenue from abortions, so that’s a good starting point, and already we’re much higher than the misleading 3% figure.
But saying that 15% of its revenue is derived from abortions is also misleading, because the percentage is shrunk by massive contributions, which totaled $363.2 million from public funds and $308.2 million from private contributors.
If we look at just the revenue that is generated by Planned Parenthood health centers—by people walking in the door looking for services—we find that abortions make up quite a bit of what Planned Parenthood does.
According to its annual report, the organization received a total of $405 million from “health center income.” According to Media Matters, Planned Parenthood took in approximately $164 million from abortions. That means that while 3% of its health center services involved abortions, 40% of its health center income was derived from abortions.
The number may even be higher, depending on how morning-after pills are categorized—Planned Parenthood calls them “contraceptives.”
Proving that the Left’s Planned Parenthood figures are misleading is a moot point, however. No matter how you slice it, at over 300,000 abortions performed each year, it’s the largest abortion provider in the United States. Any attempt to minimize that by saying it mainly provides screening or contraceptive is just dishonest.
