On September 17, 1787, the greatest political document in the history of mankind was established, the United States Constitution. Today, September 17, is Constitution Day!

Simply put, the Constitution was created by "radical right-wingers" (or at least that's what the elitists in the ruling class would refer to them as) for two main purposes:

  1. To create our federal government
  2. To limit our federal government

Item #2, uniquely inspired and revolutionary, has been all but completely ignored and explained away (i.e., destroyed) by corrupt and self-proclaimed "intellectual" politicians, bureaucrats, attorneys, and judges.  The States created the federal government with "enumerated powers", distinct, specific, clear, limited, legitimate functions.  The Founding Fathers understood that throughout history, the norm has been tyranny and the exception has been freedom.  Tyranny was the result of too much government, not too little.  They were fleeing from, and fighting against, too much government.  As government increases, freedom declines (the reverse is also true).  The Founders were extremely leery about establishing any federal government in the first place.  Hence, they limited the federal government.

Unfortunately, it hasn't stayed that way.  Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution lists those powers "enumerated" to the federal government.  The Tenth Amendment reserves any powers not specifically enumerated to the federal government to the "States and to the People".  Political bastardization of certain sections of the Constitution, specifically the "Commerce Clause", and the "General Welfare Clause", has resulted in what we have now, a virtually unlimited government, effectively voiding without amendment the enumerated powers and the tenth amendment.

We have an out of control, power hungry federal government that fires a CEO of a major American corporation, tells people where and under what circumstances they should and shouldn't travel, tries to tax everything including the air we breathe, tells us what insurance policies we can and must buy, "regulates" every human activity, and charges you for the privilege.  According to Washington, DC, it's their money, and they're just generous enough to let you keep some of the money you earned.  Try to think of something you do in a given day that has not been influenced, if not controlled, by the U.S. Government.  I won't hold my breath.

Is there anyone who feels that what the Founding Fathers envisioned is anything approaching the Leviathan we attempt to endure today?  Did the Founders ever imagine a government that is the nation's largest employer, land owner, renter, insurer, mortgage broker, debtor, property manager, etcetera, etcetera?

Believe it or not, there are only four letters of the alphabet that aren't being used as the first letter in some kind of government agency, department, or bureaucracy (Q, X, Y, & Z). For example, here are just a few that start with the letter "A":

Administration for Children and Families (ACF)

Administration for Native Americans

Administration on Aging (AoA)

Administration on Developmental Disabilities

Administrative Committee of the Federal Register

Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts

Advisory Council on Historic Preservation

African Development Foundation

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)

Agency for International Development

Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry

Agricultural Marketing Service

Agricultural Research Service

Agriculture Department (USDA)

Air Force

Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (Treasury)

Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Bureau (Justice)

American Battle Monuments Commission

American Forces Information Service

American Samoa Home Page

AMTRAK (National Railroad Passenger Corporation)

Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service

Appalachian Regional Commission

Architect of the Capitol

Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board (Access Board)

Archives (National Archives and Records Administration)

Arctic Research Commission

Armed Forces Retirement Home

Arms Control and International Security

Army

Army Corps of Engineers

Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Interagency Coordinating Committee

Atlantic Fleet Forces Command

A few of these are legitimate (Army, for example), but did you honestly know that your tax dollars were going to pay for this many bureaucracies? And these are just the ones beginning with the letter "A"!  There's not enough ink to list them all.

Where are the lovers of freedom that fight for less government involvement in our lives?  Look to the Tea Party movement, the 9/12 groups, the Campaign for Liberty, and a precious few political leaders like Mike Pence and Jim DeMint.  Patriotic Americans like actress Janine Turner, who created the great site promoting the Constitution for adults and kids alike, Constituting America, are working to restore the Constitution to its rightful place...the Supreme Law of the Land, as written and as intended.  This Saturday, September 18th, Constituting America and Let Freedom Ring  are promoting National Constitution Reading Events.  You can find one near you at We Read the Constitution.

When are we going to say that we have enough government? When are we going to get back to the constitutional mandate of limited government and maximum freedom?  I say, NOW, while we still can.  Let's fight the long battle in restoring the time-tested constitutional principles that made our country great, free, and prosperous.  Celebrate the Constitution.  Read it, study it, share it, and make our politicians abide by it.  It's what keeps us free.  Happy Constitution Day!
